Nokia / Microsoft Rumors Reemerge

By: Aldo Panessidi

Nokia / Microsoft Rumors ReemergeTechnology companies are increasingly traded, acquired, and merged within industry similar to commodities with enormous sums of money involved.  Since the stakes are high in these transactions – industry rumors of sales, mergers and acquisitions are closely monitored and followed.  It is this high-energy atmosphere that may account for Nokia’s inability to quell rumors swirling about selling its Nokia cell phone line of business to Microsoft.

The Finnish company’s smartphone future was called into the speculation spotlight once again this Wednesday when Danske Bank informed its clients that Nokia will be selling the smartphone division to Microsoft sometime in the first half of 2012. This kind of claim carried serious clout as it came from the largest bank in Denmark. And with any speculation, there is money to be made which undermines some confidence in veracity. After making this announcement, Danske Bank changed the rating of Nokia stock from “Hold” to “Buy” – appropriately, and strangely similar sounding to Microsoft’s bing.com price predictor…).  Empower your ability to enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool.  Discover select accessories, such as, stylus & pens, SD Memory cards, data cables, chargers and batteries all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Nokia / Microsoft Rumors Reemerge

This could be a great move for the Scandinavian company as they have seemed to struggle with the transition from feature phones to smartphones. The Symbian OS is nowhere as popular as its Google and Apple counterparts and its most recent smartphone releases are sporting Windows OS. The mobile accessories, consumer driven and end-user intuitive electronic gadgets have been surprisingly lacking as well which has affected the “stickiness” of the smartphones in the global market place. And where is the tablet to accompany and complement these technologies?

In May Nokia vehemently denied the rumors of a sale, but they kept cropping up as reports continued to come in that the two companies were indeed in discussions. The response from Nokia this time? “We put these rumors to rest a long time ago.” Clearly not, Nokia. Clearly not.

The device is an S40 based device that will come complete with a 1 GHz processor as long as the patented clear black display that has become the source of a lot of media reports these last few weeks.  Hopefully, the company will be debuting it at the Nokia connection conference of 2011 that will be held in Singapore in just a few weeks.  It is there that the company officials, including the CEO who has been quite outspoken in recent months, will debut the new products that the company will be releasing.  Of course, the company has not made any definitive statements about what his upcoming, and they are not expected to make any new announcements until the conference rolls around.

Nokia Has New 1 GHz Handset with ClearBlack Display Coming

With the newest device being confirmed by Mr. Freytes over Twitter, it was not immediately clear if the company wanted to make the announcement over the social networking service.  Shortly after the announcement was made over the social networking service the Tweets were quickly removed.this suggests that perhaps the announcement was not supposed to come at this time.  Okay as a company that has been falling behind the smart phone market share in recent weeks, and they likely one of the announcement to remain hush-hush until it was made at the conference in the next few weeks.

Worldwide Shipping starts for Nokia N8

Nokia’s widely anticipated smart phone, the Unlocked Nokia ( N8 ) has begun shipping worldwide and should hit retailers in the Canada within a couple of weeks. The phone’s release has been hit by delays and was originally intended to be on sale by September. However for those who have already pre-ordered it, it will no doubt be worth the wait.

Boasting a 12-Megapixel camera and 720pHD video recording this is certainly a smartphone that can pack a punch. With a 3.5inch high definition touch screen it’s certainly one of the wider phones on the market too. Retailing at $549 outside of a contract it will certainly make the wallet lighter but then again this certainly isn’t a phone for those afraid of spending top-dollar.

What’s really significant about this phone however is it is Nokia’s first phone to be powered by the Symbian^3 platform. This allows the phone to display live twitter and facebook updates on the home screen, sort of like a live RSS feed.

Although quite expensive, the phone also comes with numerous applications other companies might ask you to pay for. One of these is the Ovi Maps navigation software which is very useful as a Sat-Nav when driving or on foot and trying to find directions in a new city.

Nokia have released several promotional videos of this sleek looking phone over at Nokia.com and they are well worth a look. However, anyone looking to get their hands on one of these should place a pre-order sooner rather than later as they no doubt are already high in demand.

Nokia Listings: A Tool for Emerging Markets

Nokia Listings is the new application offering from the Nokia Beta Labs for the emerging markets. Still in its beta phase, this new app is designed specifically to connect consumers and sellers, targeting at the same time the huge job seeking population and prospective employers. It is also supposed to allow service providers to promote a product directly to users of this app.

A majority of job hiring and normal consumer based transactions, such as apartment rentals, within emerging markets occur through either a word-of-mouth system or via middlemen that charge a hefty service charge for their role in the transaction. Nokia Listings is an attempt to wipe out the function of the middlemen and allow the total benefits of the digital emerging marketplace to basic cell phone users. The best part of this service is the fact that it doesn’t necessarily need a GPRS or EDGE connection as most communication is done through a simple SMS system.

The ingenious system does not even require users to register as it can be pre-activated from the dealer. Furthermore each listing on this app is smartly geo-coded such that a user can easily access services located within close proximity to their location. The best function involved with the application is that once the listings are sent to you, you can either contact the person involved with the listing via calling or if you wish you can simply forward the listing to a friend.

The beta period of this app has resulted in the services related to Nokia Listings being made available to only select regions of India. However the good news is that a full release is expected any time soon now. The possibilities this application produces are endless and a successful run for this service may well result in a world changing effect. Here’s looking forward to Nokia Listings on your phone.

HID Global and INSIDE Contactless’s new initiative

HID Global along with INSIDE Contactless is adding another major innovation to already exhausting credentials by introducing iClass access controls to the handsets that are NFC-enabled. This along with identity credentials will result in the plastic cards that are used today being replaced by applications that are helpful in identifying the consumer or the commercial. Thus being a one of a kind venture in the field of cell phone security.

News concerning such issues doesn’t generally receive a lot of attention in the media and mostly remain ignored or unnoticed but when a little birdie spreads the word that INSIDE Contactless has certain monetary dealings with the two moguls in the mobile handset industry namely Unlocked Nokia Cell Phones and Motorola, it is bound to cause a stir. This also brings to the forefront the biggest problem to the venture i.e. the lack of NFC-enabled phones available in the market today. Keeping this in mind the thought of owning a phone that would enable contactless payments and identification possible seems far-fetched. But again that is a different story altogether and doesn’t call for concern or alarm and should be left to the initiators to worry about.

Sources from inside the company reveal that INSIDE has gone so far, as to update its micro read NFC controller to make use of the required protocols and command sets so that it can communicate with the HID iClass readers. The company has also decided to feature iClass support in all the NFC products that will be launched by them in the future. This will ensure that users using INSIDE’s iClass enabled microread NFC controller will now be able to use the iClass virtual credentials support upon requirement. In order to use these virtual credentials and the credential management and crypto functions, they have to be activated. The software’s are provisioned by HID Global and it is they who will activate your required credentials.

Analyzing MeeGo UI Design guidelines

Nokia first started out creating a Linux based operating system many years ago, called it Maemo, and the product was named Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. In the design department, it was aces, but from the performance point of view, it was awfully slow. Because of this, it never got much recognition. After that came the N800. Design-wise, it looked very much like a toy, but its performance was better and faster, but it was not enough to win over the consumers in a major way. So, the N800 also bombed. It was succeeded by the N810. It had a very nice and large screen, had a faster processor, and even had GPS. People would have loved a radio to go with all these too, but it did not happen. This set too was not much of a crowd puller. After all these failed products, Nokia finally struck gold with the Nokia Unlocked  N900. People were awed by its introduction in the market. It was quite a relief for Nokia, but even this did not last long, and even though this phone had a much faster processor, it slowly ebbed away from people’s minds.

Recently Nokia and Intel held a joint press conference, and announced the MeeGo. MeeGo is Nokia’s love child, built for ARM processors, and Intel’s Moblin operating system. Nokia Unlocked Cell-Phones then purchased a company in 2008, called Trolltech, and made a run time environment called Qt. A run time environment is something, which a programmer can use to write his applications. The main aim was to layer Qt at the head of Symbian based mobile phone so that the applications may be prepared in the similar environment.

Recently, a set of documents was released, discussing about MeeGo user interface guidelines. In a world where HTML5 is getting more adopted by the passing day, where the MeeGo stands is a good question, and we shall only know when they are finally introduced in the market

“Death Grip” forces Apple to look for Antenna Engineers

The “Death Grip” which took hold of almost all the owners of the Unlocked iPhone 4 has again hit Apple with a new controversy which broke very recently. After it was discovered that on holding the phone in a certain way, the signal would vanish almost instantaneously, Apple has been looking for ways to get out of the mess they created for themselves.

For a company that is so obsessed with perfection and giving the best for the customers, this was a huge public relations disaster. What was more shocking was the bit of news which came to our notice. On the day the problem with the iPhone 4 was discovered, Apple apparently had posted five job listings which specifically read “Antenna engineer-iPad/iPhone?”

Now we understand that this may just be a coincidence, but on the surface it seems too much of a hypothetical situation to not be one. Most interestingly, companies like Nokia unlocked phone actually tried to capitalize on this public relations disaster. They had publicized a line of phones putting stress on the fact that you could hold this phone anyway you wanted to.

However, it has definitely come to our attention that Apple is working to resolve this issue. They have been working hard to make it clear to the Apple store employees to not entertain any sort of complaints from the customers or even heed to any demands for a replacement. Hence one wonders, whether Apple is so obsessed with keeping company secrets.

Plus it is strange that this problem broke in the first place as the company had done Beta testing with the help of their employees who would be carrying around their phones. Hence one has to return to the age old argument which says that never buy any say gadget from the first line which hits the stores.
