AmEx Gets Into Mobile Payments

American Express is entering the person to person transaction space online, in an attempt to directly compete with PayPal. They have announced the launch of their newest service, titled Serve. The service will work exactly like PayPal for the most part. You will log in using an email address that you have confirmed for your account. You will then be able to send and receive payments to other Serve users utilizing your email address.

There will be a few features that will be seen on Serve and are not available through PayPal that could help them to attract small businesses. For instance, they will allow users to automatically add funds to their account using a prepaid card. Currently the only way to get funds into your PayPal account is to transfer the money from your bank account, which could take as much as three business days for the transfer to complete.

With the launch, there will already be payment apps for unlocked iPhone 4 and Android available. One of the most exciting features of Serve is the addition of sub accounts, which will allow users to create accounts under their main account. This would serve parents well who want to give their kids their own accounts with which they can spend money that the parents have allotted to the account.

It will be interesting to see how quickly the service grows. You would think that an American Express peer to peer payment service would quickly gain a following, but so far there is no evidence to suggest that any company can be successful within a space that is clearly dominated by PayPal. No competitors do even close to the numbers seen at PayPal in terms of number of users. Serve looks promising, but they may have to offer more new features to differ themselves form the competition that already has a stranglehold on the market.

New Public Mobile Roaming Agreement

As per one of the leading cell phone blog site, Public Mobile recently announced that they are going to be adding a roaming agreement for users in some of the largest cities in Canada including Ontario, Quebec and other areas in Alberta, BC, Nova Scotia and Manitoba. The first day that users will be able to star roaming is March 14th, and the service will be available to all of the current customers, regardless of their plan.

The prices for roaming are currently set at fifteen cents per minute to Canadian or US numbers. Users will also be able to receive international calls for $0.15 per minute. Outgoing texts will cost 0.15/per text and incoming texts will be completely free.

This is a move that has long been expected of Public Mobile. Some of their past customers were limited when they traveled outside of their own zone, which meant that they were not able to send or receive calls when they were in roaming areas. Now, those same customers will be able to talk and text people at a low cost rate, which is a big step up from what was offered before.

This will expand the area that they are able to cover and will allow them to attract many new customers. The company, in a statement that was released regarding the change, said that they were happy that they were able to offer value within the marketplace, and hope to continue to expand their offerings to new customers as soon as possible. The addition of roaming coverage is a step in the right direction for Public Mobile.

The company will likely continue to expand their roaming offerings in the coming months in an effort to provide more area of service for their growing user base. Public Mobile is quickly become one of the larger mobile providers within Canada.

Sony PSP 2 Forthcoming Japan Announcement.

With all of the attention that has been placed on the upcoming “Playstation Phone,” which is actually known as the XPERIA Play, you would think that the PSP had faded into oblivion and would now be replaced by mobile devices that focused on gaming technology.

It looks as though those assumptions are not true. A number of sources have confirmed that unlocked Sony Ericsson will be announcing the latest installment of their PSP series on January 27th in Tokyo, Japan.

These sources have claimed that publisher first got wind of the upcoming announcement in late 2010, allowing them to prepare to put some titles together for the brand new system. The new PSP, the PSP 2, will probably receive a significant hardware boost over the first device, although no solid information has been released as to what those specs might entail. With the XPERIA Play performing poorly in its first frame rate tests, it too has been surrounded by rumors that it was going to be receiving a hardware upgrade. Some of Sony’s biggest third party game development companies are already reportedly hard at work on the upcoming device, so it will be interesting to see what kind of games it launches with.

There is also no new information regarding backwards compatibility with old PSP games, although you would assume that they would do everything in their power to allow users to seamlessly upgrade from one device to another. Sony is clearly putting a lot of focus on the mobile gaming industry with the PSP 2 and the XPERIA Play, but at this time neither has received an official announcement. It will be interesting to see how both devices are regarded by users and fans of the first PSP. The XPERIA Play will probably run on the Android operating system, although a version has not been specified.

Rogers and Fido Lengthen Promo Event

As per the one of the leading unlocked cell phone blog site, with all of the competition that has been centered around new monthly plans from all of the carriers, it is no surprise to see that Rogers is looking to extend the time they spend promoting their new plans. They continually are dropping the prices of their plans while adding value to them that the customers will appreciate.  A recent promotional plan by Rogers that was supposed to give early weekends and night time minute usage to their users was set to end on the sixth of January. Today, the company announced that they would be extending the length of their promotion indefinitely to keep up with current demands.

In response to the move by Rogers, Fido also expanded their promotion plans to keep up with the competitive demand precedent that has been put into place by Rogers. All competing Canadian companies have been slowly lowering the prices of their plans while continue to add features and value for their end users. This is a trend that you will likely see over the course of the next months with nearly every company in the market. By adding early evenings and weekends to their plans, Rogers has been able to garner a lot of media attention and bring new users on board. Although they originally stated that their plans would only be available for a week following the New Year, it looks as though this promotion will become a usual offering from the company – at least until they are forced to add more features or lower the price once again to compete with other carriers.

Apparently, the promotion went well enough for Rogers to extend it indefinitely. Soon, these companies could potentially run out of new features to add to their basic packages and still remain possible. It will be interesting to see which companies are able to innovate with their offerings to stay ahead of the rest of the competition.

Long Rumored Playstation Phone – XPERIA Play Receives Initial Review

Although the long rumored Playstation Phone (now called the XPERIA Play) has received a lot of attention – including having several videos uploaded demonstrating its use, Sony has been reluctant to make any official announcements on the unlocked Sony Ericsson phone and allowed any information about the device out there to remain speculation (such as the name of the phone.) Now, although the company is not ready to show anything regarding the phone at the Consumer Electronics Show, they are apparently ready to make the phone official for the first time, publicly acknowledging its existence and even giving us all of the specs to hold us over until the phone is officially released.

The phone will come complete with an excellent gaming-ready Qualcomm Adreno 205 graphics processor, which should be powerful enough to handle just about anything that they can throw at it, as well as a great looking 4-inch 854 x 480-pixel display that is as sharp as can be on the great screen, and an 8-megapixel camera, complete with Flash for excellent high quality photos. As 8 megapixel becomes the standard on most mobile devices, it will be interesting to see how long the iPhone and others continue to lag behind in terms of picture quality. The XPERIA Play also has a 1,500 mAh battery, and 512 MB of both ROM and RAM.

Needless to say, the XPERIA Play sounds as if it is going to deliver on all of the excitement that has been built around the phone. Although the company has opted out of the full Playstation branding for the phone, it is evident that fans can expect a device that is capable of playing games that are in line with the PSP and also will operate as a phone and run on the Android system. Making a phone specifically for gamers is something that should have been done a long time ago.

Microsoft Kinect sales surpass 8 million units in first 60 days

As per the one of the leading unlocked cell phone blog site, Microsoft Kinect was released to a lot of criticism, but that hasn’t stopped it from performing unexpectedly well since its release. Microsoft today announced that the Kinect has sold more than 8 million copies since it was first released. Keep in mind that this number was boosted by the fact that there were already so many XBox 360’s out there in circulation at the time of release.

The Kinect boasts a more advanced Wii-like set of features that allow users to control the console without having to use any sort of controlling device. It reads the motions of the person themselves and then converts them into controls for the console.

The Kinect has been alarmingly popular and has sold very well since it was first released. It is clear that Microsoft is attempting to turn the XBox into a complete home entertainment system, and the Kinect was an important step in that process.

With over 8 million copies of the Kinect sold, it serves as another grand accomplishment for Microsoft, a company that has been short on accomplishments in recent years. With the unit having only been available for the last sixty days the eight million numbers is huge, and they are expected to surpass the 10 million mark over the course of the next few weeks.

This definitely does not bode well for the Wii, a console that has marketed itself toward families and young children. The Kinect essentially took the features that were offered by the Wii and expanded upon them, making them more precise and crisp. Hopefully they will continue to expand upon the features offered by the Kinect in the future. With the success that it has seen Microsoft will not be able to neglect it in the future.

Shaw to Launch Wireless in September

Shaw, a company that is based in Calgary will reportedly is launching their first wireless network for unlocked cell phones sometime in September 2011. The move has long been rumored to be in the works but no concrete evidence about the move was announced by the company itself. In a statement by Jim Shaw, the CEO of the company, he said that the company was looking to expand their technology and would also be planning a wireless launch for later in the year, officially confirming rumors that had been in the wind in recent weeks.

The date that he gave was pretty non-specific. Shaw simply said that they were looking at a “late 2011” launch of the new technology, likely because he didn’t want to horse-strong the company into a solid date that they had to try to meet. However, closer inspection on the company website shows that they are aiming for a September launch. It is kind of strange that Jim Shaw wouldn’t include that in his statement if it was going to be placed on the website.

Keep in mind that other companies that have aimed for a similar launch were also delayed a few months before the technology became available to the public. It will be interesting to see how quickly the company is able to roll the technology out once they start the process of launching. Other companies, including both Bell and TELUS have had issues with launching their network in a quick and timely fashion. There are many nuances that come with launching your own wireless network and although Shaw appears to be in the perfect position to make the move, it wouldn’t be surprising to see that they were unable to make their specified launch date that was also missed by larger companies. Many are eagerly awaiting the launch of Shaw’s wireless network.

RIM Announced HTML 5 for Playbook

As per the one of the leading unlocked cell phone blog site, with millions of people anxiously awaiting the release of the RIM BlackBerry Playbook, a new video has been released that shows that Research In Motion’s new device will be able to smoothly run HTML 5, which is a feature that is not seen in many other tablets at this present juncture. Unlike the iPad, the Playbook will also be able to run Flash, which is a feature that has been highly sought after in the tablet community. While Apple maintains that Flash presents a number of security flaws (likely so they can promote their own technology) other companies have gladly enabled their users to use Flash and have been able to win many over with the feature.

In the video that was released the user walks us through the demos of several of the games that will e released on the device, shows us some videos and even surfs some of the popular websites that use HTML 5 technology. The ability to render HTML 5 sites on your tablet should be something that wins RIM many loyal Apple customers who have complained about the lack of flash on the iPad, a device that seemingly should be able to run the technology if you would like the full Internet experience, especially with so many sites now using the Flash technology.

Hopefully Research in Motion will make some announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 tonight sometime. They have been very slowly to release information about the upcoming tablet 9likely so other companies don’t jump in the fray with similar features) but this most recent video that was released has been easily the most telling about the new device. We are excited to see the other features and information that are going to be announced in the weeks and months ahead. The Playbook could very well be the first legit iPad competitor in the space.

Yellow Pages Application comes to BlackBerry Bold 9780 on TELUS

TELUS announced a deal that was reached all the way back in September that will allow the Yellow Pages app to come preloaded on a number of different unlocked BlackBerry phones. One of the main reasons behind the decision was to allow their customers to quickly and easily access numbers from different businesses. The app should already be present on your phone, and if it is not and you would like to give it a good look, simply restart your device.

A number of other features were also included on the app, including the ability to make a reservation at your favorite restaurant directly through the app as well as receive driving directions to any of the locations that are contained within the directory.

So far, the Yellow Pages app has received more than 1.8 million downloads in total, making it one of the most popular apps nearly instantly. The Yellow Pages app has been available on the BlackBerry form previously, but never for so many devices. The announcement shows that Yellow Pages is looking to rapidly expand the use of their app to as many devices as possible. They must be offering a substantial amount in return as well, because automatically packaging a new app with the phone is something that many of the users seem to find annoying.

It will be interesting to see if Yellow Pages continue their search for more devices and networks to expand to. Their inclusion in the BlackBerry operating system automatically shows that the deal that was made was a significant one. The Yellow Pages app allows you to quickly and easily find phone numbers from any of the companies that are in the directory as well as any of the personal listings contained in the white pages directory.

SaskTel Continues to Expand 3G+ Coverage

Sasktel has been expanding their 3G+ coverage for quite some time now, and with their recent announcement that they will be further expanding their services, and will be adding 3G coverage on unlocked cell phones to 17 new cities in the area.. Most of the new tower locations that they will be add will be in small town areas, but will service a large number of people. among the new towers will be one in Big Beaver, which is just east of Coronach, and also adds two large highways to their coverage.

Other territories that are being added include Oxbow, Divide and Tisdale. Most of their added towers will look to add 3G+ coverage along highways and roadways that are often frequented for oil and lumber operations. The company announced several months ago that they would be looking to expand further than they already have, and their recent addition of 17 new towers shows that they are going to live up too their promises.

All networks in Canada have been competing to expand their networks as well as the features that they offer with all of their packages. SaskTel has been at the forefront of the expansions that have been made, and have set the standard by aggressively increasing the capabilities of their coverage.

The company did not make any announcements about future expansions to their 3G+ network, but it is assumed that the company will continue to upgrade areas of their network that are not 3G+-enabled.

Wood Mountain, and Wadena, will help provide coverage to the northern areas, including along highways 5 and 35, which have lacked SaskTel coverage throughout the history of the company. Lafleche will also be receiving coverage, and that coverage area will extend to both highway 13 as well as highway 58. This will allow individuals who live in those areas to share more data-more often.
