Motoroal RAZR to be made available unlocked and with contract

By Megan Fleet

Motorola made my heart sing with its recent decision to make its latest Motorola Droid RAZR available with both a carrier locked and as an unlocked cell phone device.

Motoroal RAZR to be made available unlocked and with contract

When the original RAZR hit the market, Motorola revolutionized the feature phone handset. After a few years, who didn’t have a RAZR (mine was metallic pink and tough as nails)? Will the company deliver the same kind of quality with its new RAZR line of smartphone?  Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest innovative protection solutions… stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

So far the reviews indicate impressive speeds (currently one of the fastest phones on the market), and a lovely AMOLED screen, but the handset itself will either be loved or hated by customers because of its thinness and wide screen. Unfortunately, there seem to be some bugs with either software or the touch screen that could result in occasional typing delays. Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Personally, the Gorilla Glass wins me over every time… this not surprising in light the high market/user complaints of the  iPhone‘s propensity of replacement  due to shattered screens.   Beyond the specs, look and performance, it has to be noted that Motorola is aggressively marketing and selling this newest addition to its RAZR family.   Will they undertake a similar marketing strategy for the Motorola Xoom tablet?

Motoroal RAZR to be made available unlocked and with contractBy making this handset available at an incredibly reasonable cost with a 3 year contract with Fido, many customers are bound to bite. The second stroke of genius was making the smartphone available unlocked and untied to a contract or carrier. Experience the freedom of unlocked cell phones… these devices empower user to break free from service provider strangleholds and choose their preferred carrier while negotiating the best service level contract that meets their unique lifestyles at lower monthly fees.

One can only hope that Motorola’s contemporaries will see the light and follow suit. Personally, I am curious to see if these smartphone / tablet companies test those waters first with tablets. How we consume data, media, and communicate is changing so fast that we may see the mobile providers take a serious fall in the future. But in the meantime, check out the RAZR and if it doesn’t suit your fancy, there are many other unlocked devices to choose from out there!

Android and Apple: Power Struggle For Market Dominance

By Aldo Panessidi

It is common knowledge that both Apple and Google are the foremost thought leaders in the technology industry and as a result have secured global dominance of the smartphone OS market space. What is surprising is reviewing the numbers and trends that show an astronomical growth for the two giants over the course of 18 months. As can be seen in chart provided by comScore – the leading provider of online digital world measurement metrics – U.S. mobile subscribers are used to demonstrate the dramatic transition in market shares in the ever growing smartphone market. Discover the benefits of online shopping…. experience the largest assortment of wireless device accessories at the lowest prices on the Internet.

Google Apple Market Share

In less than a year and a half (between August 2010 and November 2011), the combined U.S. market share for Google and Apple – based on the number of mobile subscribers of iPhones and Android phones – jumped from 43.8 percent to 75.6 percent! When one considers the exponential growth of the mobile market and the rapid consumer adoption of wireless devices such as unlocked cell phones and tablets as well as for the associated branded protective accessories… it becomes apparent how staggering the revenue potential of these combined markets really is.

Another drastic market shift is the fall of beleaguered Canadian high-tech giant, Research In Motion. RIM has been plagued with technology based challenges, security issues, lackluster apps, production setbacks, numerous litigations and dismal product design, which all contributed to its fall from grace. Losing subscribership in the 18 month period, RIM’s BlackBerry market share dropped from 37.6 percent to 19.7 percent. Microsoft didn’t fare any better when it’s popularity poll was cut almost in half. Lastly, market laggard, Palm who? Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool! Discover select accessories, such as stylus & pens, SD Micro memory cards, batteries, speakers and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Smartphone Market Share

So how and why did Android and Apple win over so many consumers? Analysts and industry experts seem to agree that unlocked phones for carrier neutrality, provided subscribers with the freedom to break away from being tied in with long term service provider contracts and negotiate lower priced service plans that best met their lifestyle needs . Secondly, the branding of not only the device, but the wide array of innovative top brand accessories drew customers in. Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky! Discover the latest innovative protection solutions of stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases specially designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes with our. Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside our brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Speedracer Meets Mobile Web Browsing Testing.

By Megan Fleet

On a personal note, my mother is a literature junkie. So, it is no surprise that on their cross country jaunts to visit over the holidays she loads up her smartphone with audio book downloads before hitting the road. As we discussed my newest iPad 2 tablet acquisition and simultaneously recounted the wonderful rendition of Austenland, she insisted I download the audio book app and log in under her name to download it. Just a few short minutes later, the file was available. Her response was “wow. I am seriously impressed at how fast you were able to download and store it without needing additional memory storage cards.”

Speedracer Meets Mobile Web Browsing Testing.

And, in this world of instant gratification, speed is king. Especially on our mobile browsers. So which smartphone manufacturer has the need for speed? This is an excellent question considering the varying strengths of these smartphone players. Android is the bees knees in the LTE support category. iOS has the top of the line dual-core A5 chip to tout its excellence. And, Windows Phone has the IE mobile browser that kicks it into beast mode.

This question may already be answered YouTube video posted below – which compares the Lumia 800, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 (running on the iOS version 4.3).  Put through a gauntlet of Browsermark, Speed Reading, Sunspider, Acid 3, and HTML5 tests… you will be surprised to find which device was the hands down winner.   Experience the mind blowing clarity of XMI Speakers.  Uncompromised sound quality and a revolutionary design accentuating  today’s interactive lifestyle.   Our earpieces and headsets combine sophisticated style and precision engineering that deliver brilliant sound for your total listening pleasure.

It was no contest…the iPhone 4S was beyond the best performance. This is really no surprise when considering what is powering these phones. Nokia’s Lumia 800 has a single core processor which could not keep up with iPhone 4S’s dual core A5 chip. Great news for media junkies and browsers alike… as well as for book lovers like myself, worthy of buying a new pair of headphones for some superior lit listening.  Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

There were, however, a few instances where Window’s Phone 7’s mobile browser overpowered the Safari browser on the iPhone 4’s iOS 4.3. That matchup is a bit questionable when taking into account the older version of iOS that the device was running. The question of carrier grade 3G or 4G speeds and availability may affect this as well. This is another great point for unlocked cell phones which empower customer to break free from service provider long term contracts and negotiate a service plan that better meets their unique lifestyle needs at lower costs.

As in any kind of real world testing, the results are not are controlled or predictable, but it can still be said that Apple produces a great smartphone that appeals to the mobile browser speed fiends out there.

ASUS Rumored to Soon Release Sleeker Tablet

By John Castell

Android has long looked for a competitive alternative to Apple’s first to market tablet, the iPad. So, when ASUS launched the Eee Pad Transformer last year the Google world was afire with the high quality and feature rich applications of this Taiwanese tablet. Energized by the market’s response, the next generation release, the Transformer Prime, was another hit.   Discover an extensive selection of the latest lithium technology replacement unlocked cell phone and wireless devices batteries.  Ensure your device is powered by brand name batteries for longer operating life.

ASUS Rumored to Soon Release Sleeker TabletBoth of these devices rocked a 10.1 inch display. What makes these ASUS tablets especially popular is their versatility. They can dock into a keyboard which converts it into a netbook thus making  it more user friendly for users that prefer a wireless keyboard over a soft keyboard. With the myriad of micro SD memory cards, desktop chargers, stylus & pens and other add-on accessories available to customize tablets into a more powerful tool, this is an incredibly appealing option for Android fans.

ASUS Rumored to Soon Release Sleeker TabletWith this kind of popularity, it is no surprise that ASUS has started some exciting buzz around some speculated tablet debuts at the fast approaching Consumer Electronics Show in February. According to Notebook Italia, which recently shared leaked promotional images, they believe that the tablet manufacturer is preparing to uncover a 7 inch Eee Pad tablet. New inventive accessories for these prospective smaller tablets will be interesting to see considering the popularity of the hard keyboards on the 10.1 inch versions.

Whether this is the long awaited Eee Pad MeMO (which made its first appearance at last year’s Consumer Electronic Show), or maybe even a new, sleeker and smaller Transformer tablet, the wait will not be long and an official announcement will put wondering minds at ease in just a few short weeks!

BlackBerry Curve 9380 Review

By:  Aldo Panessidi

December 29, 2011

The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is RIM’s first ever-released Curve with a touch screen. The Curve product line is usually an expression of RIM’s understanding for a budget phone and this one supposedly, doesn’t make a difference. It should attract customers with a lower entry price while offering the full BB OS 7 experience.

Physically the BlackBerry Curve 9380′s measurements are a svelte 109mmx60mmx11.2mm with a 3.2 inch display… weighing just 98grams makes the unlocked cell phone very pocket friendly.

The new Curve 9380 is basically a downgraded Torch 9860 – it has a less-capable processor and smaller and low-res display.   The BlackBerry Curve 9380 comes with a standard set of accessories – a USB cable, a wall charger and a set of headphones are provided. In addition there is a complimentary 2GB MicroSD card as well.

The following Blackberry Curve 9380 video provides great user interface insight

The BlackBerry Curve 9380 comes with a fixed-focus single LED flash camera offering the highest resolution of all RIM smartphones.  It does however, have a relatively low number of customizable settings.  The image quality is about average with pleasing colors and a good amount detail.

It is incapable of capturing HD videos due in part to its lower processor clock.   The best it can do is VGA clips at 30 frames per second (fps).  The video quality is up, however overall audio is poor.  Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool.  Discover select, stylus & pens, earpieces & headphones, data cables, desktop chargers, car kits and special glider gloves,  accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

The web browser is fast and responsive, however, it does not support Flash.  It does provide a solid set of organizer tools. Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest  innovative protection solutions of stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases designed to allow you to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside brand name protection cases and skins accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

The following is a snapshot of the Curve 9380 full feature list, followed by its disadvantages.

Key features:

  • 3.2″ 16M-color TFT touchscreen of HVGA resolution (360 x 480 pixels)
  • Quad-band GSM support and tri-band 3G with HSDPA

  • 512MB RAM
  • BlackBerry OS v7
  • BlackBerry’s proprietary email service and data security
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n connectivity
  • GPS receiver and BlackBerry maps preloaded
  • 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera and a LED flash
  • VGA video recording @ 30 fps
  • 150MB of inbuilt storage
  • 2GB MicroSD card pre-bundled
  • Four physical buttons at the bottom
  • Optical trackpad
  • Hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 16GB)
  • DivX and Xvid video support

Main disadvantages:

Carrier IQ Speaks Out Regarding Stealth Software Rumors

By Megan Fleet

Carrier IQ Speaks Out Regarding Stealth Software Rumors

After the constant buzz around Carrier IQ and its prolific data collecting software… which is purported to be a service that collects information from the customer handsets of certain mobile carriers, the company has finally decided to pipe up amid what is shaping up to be an escalating scandal.  They have released a detailed report regarding its stealth app software in an effort to protect themselves by outlining what they do and why they do it.  Accessories are designed to protect, personalize and enhance your mobile devices.  Discover innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry’s most leading brands

According to Carrier IQ, the Android log files that sparked this controversy did contain unencrypted personal information. However, following that admission the company stated that those were cases that should not normally occur. So why did it? Some mobile device handsets come preloaded with Carrier IQ which causes messages to debug from the pre-production manufacturer software. In other words, the transmittance of unencrypted data is the by-product of faulty software – not an intentional action of data stealing and reporting to carriers. For current Android customers, there are apps to seek out the cloaked software. For those prospective customers, who want security against this type of big brother monitoring need to explore the freedom offered by  unlocked cell phones – break free from service provider long term contracts; choose your preferred service providers and negotiate  a service packages that meet your individual lifestyle needs.

Carrier IQ Speaks Out Regarding Stealth Software Rumors

As it stands, the company has recognized that there is a flaw in the software that needs to be addressed. At the moment, Carrier IQ is collaborating with mobile device manufacturers and carriers alike to roll out a comprehensive fix that will protect customer and data privacy. End goal is to cease the debugging messages entirely as soon as a smartphone has been activated.  Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Protect your devices from scratches and blemishes with our stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside our brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Beyond unencrypted log files, greater cause for concern was the accusation of Carrier IQ recording SMS transactions. They are deflecting blame to one up to another bug in the app that results in recorded messages under vague “unique circumstances.” The circumstances that were mentioned included receipt of an SMS while in the middle of a call or data session. Not quite an uncommon or unique occurrence. Thankfully the SMS messages relayed back to Carrier IQ are encrypted for a higher degree of data privacy.   Enhance your mobility… turn your device into a power tool.  Discover the select accessories such, stylus & pens, batteries, microSD memory cards, chargers, glider gloves and other premium electronic gadgets specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

While an exact timeline hasn’t been announced, there was a promise made that the issue would be handled and fixed quickly.

And, for those most affected, the 19 page report is available to the public in PDF form. Please see previous blog entries for additional details regarding unlocked cell phones and for a partial list of carriers involved.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia ‘Nozomi’ – Wows

By Adhurim Murtezai

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia 'Nozomi' - WowsNozomi, Nozomi – where have you been all our life?! Okay – in tech speak that translates into « where have you been all this year?! » But the sentiment is the same. The more we see of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Arc HD (also known by the name Nozomi, the more stunned we are of the beauty of this devise.

Thin and super modern, this chic smartphone has a 1280×720 pixel HD display and is rumored to sport a 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor under the hood. But for those who need more oomph of memory and electronic accessories are available to enhance phone features and functionality.

Another Google Android platform phone, this upcoming addition to the Sony Ericsson line features a 12 MP back camera, an HDMI port for 1080p mirroring and possibly a light bar for its touch buttons. What has been confirmed is that the Android OS will be the 2.3.5 Gingerbread will be the operating system upon release and then to be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich when Sony Ericsson is ready to roll.  No news on whether this will be released as an unlocked cell phone that will be carrier agnostic, but those details are sure to be forthcoming.
Sony Ericsson’s Xperia 'Nozomi' - Wows

Unfortunately, this little darling does not have a micro SD card port. Internal storage is either 16GB or 32GB.  To cut down on space, there will be no micro SIM port. On more additional and important, but not so glamorous detail, is that the battery looks to be non-removable and of an unknown size.  Again, these shortcomings can be addressed with memory sticks and the like once accessory manufacturers and Sony Ericsson let us know what will be compatible with the Nozomi.   Accessories are designed to protect, personalize and enhance your mobile devices.   Discover the latest, innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry’s most leading brands .

Exponential Increase in Text Messaging

By Aldo Panessidi

There are jokes galore about how our phone usage has drastically changed with the advent of widespread smartphone distribution and usage. These devices are now our gateway to social media, personal and business texting, email, bank accounts, and countless other applications. Most notable is that texting has seemed to take the place of our chat time. There are even hands free accessories out there to make this behaviour safer!

Exponential Increase in Text MessagingIn fact, the latest texting statistics are staggering.  According to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), the 2011 texting total so far this year in Canada alone is in excess of 57 billion!  19.5 billion of those were from Q3 which was comparable to usage in the 2nd quarter, but the fast fingers were even busier this quarter and setting new records.  The entirety of 2010 text messaging in Canada came to 56.4 billion.  And that was a 60% jump from the 2009 data (35.3 billion sent text messages). There have been increased reports as well of hand / joint related problems with individuals that engage in the highest volume texting.  Enhance your mobility… turn your device into a power tool.  Discover select accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

So when did the uptick really take off? For 2011, the statistics show September as the winning month with 6.7 billion messages. A little quick math averages that out to 224 million texts sent per day. Considering that these numbers don’t include MMS (multimedia messages), these messaging numbers are actually on the low side. January to August of this year brought in 223.7 million MMS. Again dominant, September saw the greatest increase in daily messaging with an increase of almost 150,000 messages over the August totals.  Perhaps this trend can be attributed to back to school, back to work, and the inevitable return to the great indoors for the fall and winter months.  View the latest innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry’s most leading brands.

Exponential Increase in Text Messaging

No matter the drivers for this behaviour, these changes point to a need to really consider your carrier’s messaging plans or look into an unlocked cell phone to maximize your consumer power and shop for the best plans to suit how you use your mobile device.

Sony Ericsson Treads Lightly in Introducing Android 4.0 ICS to Customers

By Aldo Panessidi
Sony is taking full heed of the old adage – « Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. » While this is not  quite how the phrase was made notorious by former President George W. Bush, but it is a sentiment that Sony Ericsson customers can relate to.  Way back when Android released v1.6 (time being relative in the technology world) for the Sony Xperia X10, customers experienced an unnecessary amount of pain when attempting to upgrade their smartphones’ operating system.

Prior to November 14th Sony Ericsson did not have access to the Android 4.0 ICS sourcecode, so they pulled up their shirtsleeves and began adapting their different devices.  Since  the code was optimized to work with Texas Instrument chipsets, there were some inevitable delays as Sony Ericsson rewrote most of the code from Hardware Abstraction Layer in order to interoperate with Qualcomm’s hardware.  In a heart-warming display of corporate collaboration… this software coding  is being shared with Android and its open source project – perhaps hinting at a willingness to pursue carrier neutrality with unlocked cell phone releases in the future.Sony Ericsson Treads Lightly in Introducing Android 4.0 ICS to Customers

The behind-the-scene coding work ensured that the migration to the Gingerbread v2.3 was, like its name, sweeter and smoother, with significantly less customer trepidation.  Moving forward,  Sony Ericsson has opted to makeover all the 2011 Xperia devices with the Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS v4.0 – across all their Xperia brand portfolio –  Sony Xperia Mini Pro, Sony Arc, Sony Ray, Sony Cedar and Sony Play). For those Xperia smartphone users that prefer more tangible upgrades, a physical makeover with updated protective cases and skins may be more satisfying while waiting for the ICS OS release.

In their efforts to effectively communicate the upcoming upgrades, Sony Ericsson has been very open with customers. This is great and all, but consumer impatience is setting in. After all, it’s the season for instant gratification – even if that new speaker dock for your smartphone has to sit on the closet shelf for a few weeks. To top off the impatience, some users still have some lingering concerns based on the Android 1.6 incident.

In  true technology-forward fashion, Sony Ericsson released a detailed blog post which outlining the timeline of events for the ICS OS roll out. There is no firm date on when the ICS upgrades will be available to end-users as their mobile devices go through rigorous internal testing and then testing externally to receive certification from the various carriers.

RIM patch or collaboration post PlayBook Jailbreak?

By Megan Fleet

News of RIM’s BBX OS vulnerability is a big deal because of its stellar reputation for OS security. The hacker (allegedly a gentleman by the name of Chris Wade) who created the tool to jailbreak the BlackBerry Playbook should have better capitalized on the momentous occasion with a catchier program name than Dingleberry.  Protect, personalize and enhance your mobile devices with the latest trend-setting and technology advanced accessoreis.

RIM patch or collaboration post PlayBook Jailbreak?

The tool is said to allow root access to the BlackBerry Playbook that also allows access to the operational software code. RIM is taking swift action and working with those responsible for unearthing the vulnerability.  Enhance your mobility… turn your device into a power tool.  Discover the select accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

The company is also in full blown damage control to prevent an onslaught of panicked BlackBerry smartphone users as they are « currently not aware of a jailbreak being leveraged by anyone other than the researchers, who claim to have performed a jailbreak on their own BlackBerry PlayBook tablets only ».

While they are currently working with the, uh, « researchers,» the consequences for them releasing the jailbreak tool independent of RIM.  Swift action is also being taken, in the form of a cease and desist letter.  Personally, it seems, as though unlocked phones provide you with more protection against this sort of issue.. as they allow you to choose your service provider of choice

A security patch is likely to be included in a future software update.  If they move to a more collaborative model and engage the researchers to develop a safe and effective tool (much like Microsoft did when the Windows Phone jailbreak occurred), great innovation and PR could be the result.  But, with RIM’s security reputation on the line, this seems not as likely.

For more information on to protect your tablets and smartphones, online retailers have great resources and solutions to review.
