Rogers Is Stopping The System Access Fee

So after many years it looks like Rogers Communications is finally getting rid of the System Access Fee that is charge on all cell phone plans.  This is great news.  No more $6.95 charge on each plan.

Okay before everyone gets all excited they are not really losing the plan.  The are replacing the 6.95$ fee with another fee called GRFF.  Basically the new fee will be $2.46 to $3.46 depending on which province you are in.  Also according the The Star all plans will be going up $5.  So from what it seems like plans will be more expensive.

Granted Rogers Communications hasn’t made any official announcements yet, but look for one soon on their website.  Another thing is if you are currently under a contract with your cell phone or smartphone plan the old SAF will still apply until your contract runs out or you make a plan change.

Rogers 21Mbps HSPA+ Network Is Live

That’s right Rogers Communications has just released their new high speed HSPA+ network.  The new network runs at 21Mbps.  This is good news for high speed downloading on wireless devices like laptops and cell phones.

Right now the 21Mbps HSPA+ network is only available in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver but Rogers Communications does plan on expand

Another downside is technically their are no cell phones on the network that take advantage of the 21Mbps HSPA+ network, but Rogers Communication has released a new Mobile Internet Stick that will.

If you’re interested in faster download speeds on your cell phone stay tuned.

Rogers Changes Upgrade Rules

So a few months back Rogers Communications announced that it would be change hardware upgrade policy for smartphones from every 12 months to every 24 months.  Well Rogers has not done the same for all phones.

This means that you need to wait 2 years before you can get a deal on a new phone.  If you want a new cell phone before hand you have to pay their full price.

This has angered a lot of people because now instead of getting a new phone every year they have to wait.  Rogers has been quoted at saying that the reason for the change in policy is because it allows them to bring better phones to more people and also because cell phone quality has improved a lot consumers don’t need to upgrade every year.

If you are looking for alternatives and arent’ happy with your current provider now may be the time to start looking at unlocked cell phones.

Is Rogers Getting An 8GB iPhone 3GS?

So over the past few days it has looked more and more like Rogers is planning on carrying the Apple iPhone 3GS in 8GB flavour.  Up until now Apple has been saying that the iPhone 3G would remain part of the line up and the iPhone 3GS would only come in 16GB and 32GB editions.

A couple of days last week it was reported that Rogers website had started posting things on the site that made it look like they were phasing out the iPhone 3G 8GB for a new Apple iPhone 3GS 8GB.  Well on thing that appeared was a comparison chart with a checkbox under 8GB 3GS

Gizmodo received a response from Rogers stating that it was an error on their part, that there is no iPhone 3Gs 8GB, and have since updated their site.

More Rogers iPhone 3Gs Details Emerge

Well it seems to follow up on our earlier posts we have received more information regarding the iPhone 3Gs coming to Canada.  According to a report over at BoyGeniusReport.com it seems that us in Canada will be able to get the new Apple iPhone 3Gs at the same pricing as in the US.   This means that as of June 19th the iPhone 3Gs will be available in Canada at both Rogers and Fido for the same pricing as the US.  The 16GB will be $199 (new activation) the 32GB will be $299 (new activation) and the 8GB iPhone 3G will be $99 (new activation).

Rogers will also be reactivating their 6GB for $30 plan for a limited time with the iPhone as of June 9th.  This is currently available but only for their new HTC Android phones.  You will be able to tether your iPhone to your laptop but your plan has to be a 1GB minimum plan.  The best news of all is if you want the new iPhone 3Gs but you aren’t eligible for an upgrade or don’t want a contract you will be able to buy the iPhone without a contract.

This seems to be validated by a Rogers spokeperson through twitter as was reported by the Globe and Mail.  I guess all anyone can do is wait until June 19th when the iPhone is released.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1a coming soon…

So thanks to our friends over at BoyGeniusReport it looks like Rogers Communications will be launching the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1a in June.  This means that everyone will finally be able to use the HSPA functions.

We at PureMobile get calls every day about the X1a.  Sony Style in the US has had it on their site since the Sony Xperia X1 came out last year but so far no one has been lucky enough to actually get their hands on one.  Well at least now the wait is soon to be over and that means we will have the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1a unlocked as soon as we can.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1a will have all the goodies of the X1, slide out keyboard, Wi-Fi, and best of all 3G.  This will allow for high speed downloads on your phone rather then using the slower Edge network.

Well the good news is the rumor is that the phone will be widely available on Rogers on June 30 but they will have some available as early as June 9 so hopefully we at PureMobile will get our hands on them as soon as possible for our loyal customers

Rogers To Bring Back 6GB Data Plan… Maybe

Last year when Rogers released the iPhone in Canada they also introduced a 6GB data plan for $30 a month.  Unfortunately this plan only lasted a short amount of time.  Well now according to our buddies over at BoyGeniusReport it looks like Rogers might be set to bring this plan back.

It would make sense with the anticipated release of a new iPhone, the HTC Dream and Magic that it is brought back to encourage sales.  This plan is like having unlimited data on your cell phone.  For all intents and purposes you won’t have to worry about going over.  Not to say there aren’t people who don’t but for the average person the 6GB should be more then enough.

Keep in mind this is still a rumour and nothing is official yet, but if it does this mean you can likely use it with any smartphone.  So everyone will have to wait to be sure but it does look good.
