What is JailBreaking?

By Mitch Stevens

Since the release of the first iPhone in 2007 I have been jail breaking the iphone. I have been caught up in conversation many times about the ability of the iPhone. When I referred to the iPhone it’s often hard for me to perceive it without being able to include the many Cydia applications I use with the wonderful IOS operating system.

JailBreak iPhone

Many people have often looked at me as if they were very confused, and say. What is jailbreaking? This is the single most question I am asked when discussing the iPhone. I have thought long and hard on the simplest way to explain jailbreaking to a person who does not understand what it is at all about. To this nd, I have crafted the following jailbreaking overview So I have tried to think about this as elementary as possible to facilitate reader understanding.

Jailbreaking allows the iPhone or other idevices such as the iPad and iPod user more freedom. When Apple developed the iPhone in their mega-billion-dollar factories, the developers, at their own discretion determined what we could and could not do with our iphones. That is a decision , I do not agree with that in any terms. Like many people I paid for this product with my personal money and believe that I should be able to decide on changing its appearance or the sounds it makes when it rebooting. Yet in 2008 or 2009 jailbreaking your iPhone was declared illegal.

Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Jailbreaking allows the user to download third-party applications from a store called Cydia. In this store many developers have been denied the chance to sell their application in the ” Apple store”. Many of the applications in the Cydia store are better applications than many I have downloaded from the Apple store. That being said these applications are hosted on repositories which are sources in the Cydia store. These applications have gone through a screening process as the Cydia operators are stand up characters and would not ruin their reputation by enabling applications that are unethical or damaging to your device.

Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

I have often had many people argue that they were afraid to download the applications from Cydia because they weren’t signed from Apple. There is a huge open source environment on the web… wherein different developers collaborate together to create new or enhance existing application with more powerful features. As such, just because an application does not originate from Apple it does not mean it hasn’t been fully screened or the code has not gone through an extensive testing process to filter or eliminate viruses.

Many of the applications from Cydia are just small tweaks. Such as, being able to swipe the status bar to open what’s called SB settings. Inside Sbsettings you can control Bluetooth, reboot, and much more. This is just an example of some of the applications that are available in Cydia. Also in Cydia you can download themes for your idevices. What I mean by theme is you can change the physical appearance of the iPhone. Whether it’s the size of the icons or the color of the status bar and much more. Needless to say, the question, What is Jailbreaking? could revoke a 500 page book. I’m trying to do it in just a few paragraphs. So to putt short and sweet. Jailbreaking allows the user to download third-party applications and themes. This will allow the user to use their phone however they wish. If you want to open the settings menu by swiping the status bar, that can be accomplished. There are many great applications and tweaks inside Cydia. Since this article is about what is jailbreaking? I am going to include a few must have applications from Cydia.

Top Must Have Cydia Applications :

· SBswitcher a tweak for iOS which will basically add a new pane over the multi-tasking pane, which will allow you to bookmark nine of your most-used apps. Now this new pane will allow a very quick access to all your favourite apps. This app also gives you an easy access to a few of your System Settings. Bundled with its core feature, this app is definitely worth $0.99. Props to the developer Tolani. He has added in the release notes that this tweak is not yet available for iPad but should be soon.

· Activator-Free- add gestures to open application.

· Infiniboard-$1.99Vertically scroll the springboard. Addis many applications as you wish to each page. No limits

Smartphones to Keep on Your Radar in 2012 and Other News

By John Castell

With the big mobile conference in Las Vegas this coming February that is certainly going to drum up a big buzz for the upcoming 2012 device releases; to this end, you may get inundated in the coming months about what the year will bring. With great mobile innovations like dual-core processors and 4G LTE brought to market in 2011, this year in review was impressive. While hard to trump, the 2012 line-up is being touted as bigger and better.  Here is a snapshot of unlocked cell phones to be dialed into.

LG Optimus LTE
Smartphones to Keep on Your Radar in 2012 and Other News

LG is looking to break into the 2012 smartphone market with vengeance as some of the LG Cell Phone lineupe rocking the latest in Android OS: 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Using the power of social media, the manufacturer announced via Facebook that in the second quarter of 2012 a number of their LG  Optimus cell phones (the Optimus LTE, Optimus 2X Prada, Optimus Sol, Eclipse and myTouch Q) would have shiny and new Android platforms. Hopefully they will give us more information on up and coming accessories to keep pace with the new technologies.

Apple iTunes annual giveaways

Unlike the RIM app giveaway that ended December 31st, Apple is continuing their annual download giveaway through January 6th. The free music downloads were kicked off by Coldplay tracks and videos (no surprise as they feature materials from the Apple sponsored festival where the band performed). With the savings on downloads, customers will have a bit more pocket change to invest in an upgraded  screen protector or jazzier protective cases and skins.

Santa Prefers Apple

With sales numbers coming in, the eCommerce company, RichRelevance, has released numbers that indicate that iPhones and iPads accounted for a whopping 92% of mobile purchases made this December.   Let’s not forget the consumer appeal for other Apple devices including MacBook and iPod This is a significant uptick from the numbers released in April 2011 by the same eCommerce firm. A mere eight months ago, the Cupertino based company made up 88% of non-desktop online shopping.  One has to wonder how much that would go up if Apple made unlocked smartphones more available to its adoring public.

The second generation iPad still has high production (in the 14 – 15 million unit range for 2011’s fourth quarter).  But come January, Apple will significantly drop its orders to suppliers to somewhere in the 4 to 5 million range. Because of the exclusive BGR report last week which stated Samsung’s timeline in revealing its new tablet at the Mobile World Congress in February. This new Samsung tablet may give the newest addition to the Apple family some genuine competition as it will be featuring a Retina-topping display resolution as well.

Translation? Samsung will have a first to market tablet with the Retina-topping screen. Likely to capture some market share and give Apple its first “run for its money” in the tablet sector.

Apple approves Opera Mini iPhone app, available in App Store soon

In what seems to be an unprecedented move Apple has recently approved the Opera mini iPhone app.  Apple has historically only approved web browsing applications that used the WebKit view that Apple includes as part of the iPhone OS SDK.  With this approval iPhone users are presented with another web browsing option when using their iPhone or iPod Touch.

The Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile web browsing by compressing data up to 90 percent before sending content to the device.  When the data is compressed it results in significantly improved page loading.  Users of this new app will notice an increase in speed when surfing the web especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network.  Also, using the Opera Mini to surf the internet will save customers money as well because of its data compression capabilities.  Smaller of amounts of data will be required to view websites which will come in real handy when users are in areas where they may incur roaming charges.

Apple iPhone 3GS 32GB White Unlocked GSM Cellular Phone

The Opera Mini browser is currently available in the App Store for free.  Many iPhone users have already downloaded the new web browser and are loving the various features it has.  The speed with which a web page loads is considerably faster and has iPhone users surfing the web like never before.  Another nice feature about the Opera Mini browser is the ease with which you can switch between web pages you are viewing.  A simple swipe at the bottom of the browser page will allow you to switch back and forth between different windows that you may have open.  Also, the Opera Mini makes it quite easy to bookmark your favorite websites which you can then use to quickly surf your most viewed pages.

iPod Novothink Charger

Another first for Apple, the iPod Novothink Charger has been released to power up your 3G and 3GS smart phone by harnessing the power of the sun.  Applying Solar Power as an energy source in a time when utilizing recycled materials for cell phone skeletons and packaging is not only hip and cool, but also becoming a way of life.

Novothink NT02 Surge Solar Charger for iPod Touch

The Novothink Charger snaps on the back of the iPhone and iPhone touch and can hook onto your backpack, purse, or briefcase handle.  While driving what could be easier than to put your phone on the dashboard to receive magnified sunrays. To remove the panel you just slide it with both thumbs and it will come off.  The panel is soft to touch, has a slip free finish, and ergonomically styled.  You have open access to your touch screen, and the connection ports are easy to connect to.  The Solar Planner feature estimates the amount of solar power you will need based on your existing usage.

The Surge Solar panel absorbs the sunrays and converts it into electricity for your phone.  When your phone is fully charged the smart solar charge excess energy that is absorbed is stored in a battery cell the Novothink contains until needed.  The obvious implication of the release of this technology device is that other companies will be scurrying to keep up this innovation, and that is a great problem to have.  Spurning competition for solar energy sources to successfully fuel and energize the cell phone industry could be beginning of many other awakenings for solar applications.  The prediction for only eco-techies every where having theses chargers is an underestimation of the human nature to really become a part of something big that is occurring.   The iPod Novothink Charger will make more of a difference to going green than most people first thought.
