Bell & Telus Launching The iPhone

Good News! The 2 remaining major players in the Canadian mobile phone industry will carry the iPhone.  On October 6th 2009, Telus and Bell released information on their websites announcing they will carry the iPhone. In order to make this happen, the companies built a new 3G network which they will share and allow them to offer GSM related offerings. This announcement effectively changes that landscape of the industry in Canada and makes for a healthy competitive playing field. The best part of this announcement is that it probably means cheaper phone / data plans or more features for the price.

Most already know that Bell and Telus share the same network along with other smaller companies. Based on the current landscape, it is fair to say that eventually other companies on the Bell / Telus network may eventually carry the iPhone as well. The question must now be asked: What will happen to the marketplace given these announcements? Speculation has already started and no one really knows, but it should work out for customers as companies compete for your business.

iPhone or Blackberry?

Recently we came across an article on the Wall Street Journal about the joys and pains of switching your phone to a smartphone.  Specifically a Apple iPhone or Blackberry.

It was a very good article but there are a few issues that we’d like to bring up.  First off the person writing this post is a Blackberry user and more specifically uses the Blackberry Curve 8900.  This is going to be as unbiased as possible as the author thinks both manufacturers have great products.

Like the article mentions it comes down to preference.  If you like Blackberry phones then you will likely stick with them and the same goes for iPhone users.  There are iPhone users that get the new iPhone every year when Apple releases it.  The only really difference is that Apple only has three phones all that look similar (slight look variations every year) and Blackberry has five or more active phones.  The choice isn’t necessarily a good thing as some people don’t want to have to from so many.

A couple of things the article said were true although they aren’t a big problem.  The first one was “The iPhone automatically changes its time when you enter a new time zone. BlackBerrys remain set to their home time zone for time stamping all emails with that time—unless you change the time in settings.”  While this is true it takes a total of fifteen seconds to go and change it to Network time.  This means that every where you go your phone will update its time based on the network.  So if you are on the east coast you will be on east cost time if you are on teh west coast your phone will say the time in the west coast.

The other issue was “The BlackBerry’s AC adaptor takes up two power outlet spots, while the small, square iPhone plug occupies only one outlet, making it more versatile and able to charge in more locations.”  We aren’t sure why they would say that.  Yes the iPhone has small one inch charger but the prongs are not retractable.  This means if you travel with it there is a chance they can bend or break.  The Blackberry charger is larger and by larger we mean the same size as every other charger.  The advantage is that the prongs are retractable and make for nicer travelling.  It only takes up two electrical outlets if you place it in the top socket.  Although an annoyance it is something that is common with a lot of plugs.

Overall we would highly recommend reading the article if you are thinking of either getting a new smartphone (Blackberry or Apple in particular) or if you are thinking about switching from a Blackberry to an iPhone or vice-versa

Is Rogers Getting An 8GB iPhone 3GS?

So over the past few days it has looked more and more like Rogers is planning on carrying the Apple iPhone 3GS in 8GB flavour.  Up until now Apple has been saying that the iPhone 3G would remain part of the line up and the iPhone 3GS would only come in 16GB and 32GB editions.

A couple of days last week it was reported that Rogers website had started posting things on the site that made it look like they were phasing out the iPhone 3G 8GB for a new Apple iPhone 3GS 8GB.  Well on thing that appeared was a comparison chart with a checkbox under 8GB 3GS

Gizmodo received a response from Rogers stating that it was an error on their part, that there is no iPhone 3Gs 8GB, and have since updated their site.

iPhone Hack/Exploit Update

So in a late development last week Apple released an upgrade to all the iPhones.  This upgrade fixes the hack/exploit that was announced last week that could allow someone to take over your iPhone and send texts or even use it to control another iPhone.

If you haven’t upgraded already then do so now.  If you’ve been holding off because you are afraid of locking your unlocked iPhone, iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS then don’t worry thanks to BoyGeniusReport.com it looks like the unlock will work on the new version 3.01 since the update only fixes the patch it doesn’t make any changes to eliminate the unlocking tool.

So what are you waiting for go update you iPhone be safe

Possible iPhone Hack

So it looks like someone, well actually a couple of someones are set to show a security exploit they have found in all versions of the Apple iPhone.  With this new exploit, according to Wired.com, “a hacker could control all the functions on the iPhone, such as e-mailing, dialing contacts — and, most alarmingly, sending more text messages to hijack even more iPhones.”  Basically they are almost in complete control of you phone and allowing them to send to your friends to control them.

There is “one giveaway is if you receive a text message containing a single square character. If that happens, [it's suggested] you immediately turn off your iPhone”.  Turning off the iPhone is currently the only method to stop the hack.  Obviously this isn’t the best option since you can’t do anything else at all.  The people who found the hack even say that someone malicious enough could take over all the iPhones in the worldvery quickly.

The two people have contact Apple about the exploit about a month ago but so far Apple has not issued any patches to fix the problem.

It should be noted that the two guys brought it to Forbes but they didn’t actually show them the exploit.  So until someone can see a real Apple iPhone or 3GS hacked we have to take this as a mild threat.

Apple iPhone 3GS One Month Later

So it’s been about a month since the new Apple iPhone 3GS was released and a lot has happened.  In the past month we’ve gone from having a locked iPhone 3GS to one where we now have them software unlocked.  The last version of the iPhone took months for them to release an unlock, but this one took a matter of weeks.

The good hasn’t been without the bad.  Some people are claiming that the new Apple iPhone 3GS has heat issues.  Some are saying that it heats up too much and the white model can be discoloured.  So far the reports are few and far between and we, at PureMobile, have people in-house who use the phone with no problems.  So I guess to each his own.

Something interesting we have seen is in sales.  So over the last month PureMobile’s sales for the iPhone 3GS in Canada has been interesting.  As of today the top five cities that have bought the Apple iPhone 3GS Unlocked are Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa.  The first four aren’t really a surprise but Ottawa surprised us a little we really thought a city like Edmonton would rank higher but it was our nation’s capitol
