Bell goes live with LTE in Barrie

Bell has turned on their LTE network in Barrie, Ontario. With this expansion in Ontario, Bell states that their LTE coverage now reaches “over 10 million Canadians and is continuously expanding to provide the ultimate cell phone and tablet transmission speeds across Canada.”  LTE brings download speeds of up 75 Mbps when in areas with LTE coverage.

To take advantage of the faster speeds on this network, you’ll need an LTE-enabled device like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE, HTC One X, and Motorola RAZR.

Barrie now joins other Canadian cities with LTE coverage, including Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Hamilton, Halifax, Guelph and Muskoka.

  • Possible HTC One X signal problems
Posted on June 14, 2012 by Pure Mobile

    By Aldo Panessidi

You may have heard that some HTC One X device owners have been experiencing problems with dropped connections and poor wifi performance.   HTC is in the process of confirming the source of these problems that are happening on some (not all) cell phones. It could be that the wifi antenna is not soldered onto the motherboard properly and is causing signal fluctuations.

This simple test was developed on the street and should diagnose whether you have a phone that suffers from the problem.  See the test in the following video:

Essentially, you’ll need to squeeze the top right corner of the device while observing the strength of the wifi signal. Place your thumb at the top right side of the display screen. Place your finger on the other side near the camera module. Squeeze gently, and watch for a change in the signal strength. If the wifi signal temporarily improves, this may mean that your device has the soldering problem. Perform the test a couple of times to make sure.

Not all phones have this problem, but it seems to be appearing more often in the Tegra 3 version. Test your phone first before assuming the worst. If you get the squeeze test result described above, let the HTC rep at XDA-Developers know about it. HTC says they’re investigating. Sit tight for word on a replacement offer until they’ve gotten to the bottom of this.

It appears that Tony Lacavera, WIND Mobile’s Chairman and CEO, believes that we’re soon going to witness the end of the prepaid wireless market, at least WIND’s part in it. In a presentation at the Canadian Telecom Summit, Lacavera called prepaid services “doomed.”

WIND Mobile predicts the fate of the prepaid market

Protect your cell phone and tablet devices with the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand bags and sleeves as well as cases and skins specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

It wasn’t long ago that WIND showed a firm commitment to prepaid services. In 2009 they came out with unlimited plans that required customers to purchase their devices without a WIND subsidy.

Today, Lacavera describes a new strategy, “In 2011 we determined that our original business plan of Metro PCS style prepaid was doomed and have since shifted all virtually all of our customer acquisition efforts to contract-free handset financing driven post-paid. We have all but abandoned any aggressive customer acquisition in the prepaid market.”

Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables, HTC Media Link and XMI Speakers all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

WIND Mobile predicts the fate of the prepaid market

WIND operates in 12 markets and plans to expand into Windsor, Woodstock, Kingston and Peterborough by the end of 2012. 13.1 million Canadians are covered by WIND’s services (1,140 cell sites) with a subscriber base that numbers 430,000. Lacavera described plans to more than double that to between 900,000 and one million subscribers by the end of 2013.

WIND will be adding some popular devices to its lineup. The Samsung Galaxy S III should bring in a nice boost to subscriptions. They’ve also got new pricing strategies in the postpaid market including plans designed for businesses. A flat rate European roaming add-on has just been put in place; giving customers the ability to make calls from anywhere in Europe to Canada and the U.S. for $0.20 a minute and data cost of $1/MB. Text message pricing remains at $0.15 each.

RIM is keeping the market interested in the BlackBerry 10 by continuing to reveal its new features. The latest: home and app screens that reinforce fast and seamless multitasking. Each pane in a four-window display will include live apps. This is similar to how the BlackBerry PlayBook can show live apps in the background. RIM is probably going to make the apps more sophisticated so that they act like widgets. The photos show the BlackBerry 10 running on pre-production alpha hardware. The top view shows quick-glance access to weather, calendar information and the song currently being played.

Leaving your unlocked Blackberry cell phones like the Blackberry Touch 9900 unprotected is risky!  Protect your Blackberry cell phones from the hustle and bustle of everyday life with blackberry cases and cover accessories from the top brands like Incipio, iSkin, Griffin, , Incase, Puregear and Otterbox all designed to combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

BlackBerry 10 will also allow the use of gestures to navigate between screens and applications. You swipe to the right from the home screen to bring up the app icon list. The music, calendar and pictures icons at the bottom scroll vertically. These icons will probably be very high-resolution and customizable on a grid. RIM already does this on its PlayBook, so we should see it here, too.

Protect and enhance your Blackberry PlayBook with the latest tablet accessories from bags and sleeves to cases, screen protectors, data cables, wall chargers, desktop chargers and car chargers as well as, memory cards and batteries

Swipe left from the home screen to bring up the inbox. This inbox combines email, SMS messages, BBMs, Twitter, Facebook and other social media accounts onto one pane. Another swipe leads to another app or some kind of a calendar widget.

    RIM BlackBerry 10

RIM says gestures will be consistent and accessible throughout the operating system and allow for fluid one-handed operation for most tasks. One gesture is what is called “looking type.”To use this feature you hold your thumb on the bottom right side of the screen. This will make everything zoom out to full view.

RIM has confirmed that they are working on the keyboard with the makers of SwiftKey. Their goals include improving the intelligent auto-correct and learning algorithms. RIM is also apparently working with Scalado on its camera “rewind” feature.

Rogers Fido Galaxy Nexus Price Drop

Carriers are in business to make money on consumer service plans… not by selling cell phones.  All carriers subsidize the cost of a handset to entice people to buy a long-term service plan, and they "lock" the phone to make sure the customer can't easily switch to a competing carrier or use it on another company's network.

This is what is happening with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus which has seen a slight price drop from $159.99 to $99.99 on a 3-year term at Best Buy, this was for all carriers (Rogers, Fido, Bell and TELUS). However, now that the device has been out for a few weeks we’ll see the price continue to fall.  As evidenced by the above flyer that shows Rogers and Fido will sink to a new Canadian low of $49.99 on a 3 year locked term. We recommend you hold off on this deal as we predict that the price for the Galaxy Nexus will drop FREE.  However, if you’re still interested, this promotion started on Friday, February 10 and Best Buy states that there are Limited quantities… absolutely  no rain checks.”

Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!   Discover the latest innovative protection solutions… stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes. Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

More and more consumers are finding that unlocked cell phones can have a lot of benefits, freeing them from the shackles imposed by carriers.  An unlocked cell phone empowers consumers to choose their preferred carrier based on the service plan that best meets their lifestyle needs at the lowest price.

  • Word is out that mobile carrier is hiding numerous Droid X, their latest model of Unlocked  smartphone, all over the Country. This was made known through a tweeter post which has aroused great hype surrounding the location of these Unlocked Cell Phones.

This info was released at @DroidLanding, a twitter account, and you may be the lucky winner of a Droid X if you look carefully enough. A bunch of Droid X has escaped and they are out there for you to track them down. @DroidLanding has been issuing clues ever since its discovery on 21st of this month, but unfortunately none of the clues has borne fruit. The Droid X phones are still not to be found. What we actually require is a better and faster update from @DroidLanding regarding the Droid X phones all over the country so that they are not just suddenly discovered by someone, one day by chance. The clues need to be more substantial. Co-ordinates or location mapping could be some of the clues they can offer to get this contest going in the right direction. Without all the right clues, it is more of a sluggish start.

@DroidLanding has pointed out that the Droids have ‘landed’. Nobody knows what that means and would definitely want to have a much better clue than this. We would personally find it quite intriguing to find one in Toronto.

If you are able to decipher the meaning of the clues offered by @DroidLanding, which are quite vague, you would be able to get your Motorola Milestone Unlocked Droid X smartphone for free. We are hoping you can track down the phone in no time with the help of more clues offered by @DroidLanding. Remember to stay on the prowl as the newest smartphone maybe ‘just around the block’ from where you stay.

  • With arrival of Google on the mobile scene, things were certain to change. So it comes as no surprise that many different developers have started creating a wide variety of applications specifically for this operating system. In fact, it has today been claimed that there are over 65,000 different applications that are available for users running Android on their smartphones. In fact, Google’s Andy Rubin has said that there are around 160,000 android activations taking place daily. This coupled with there being over 65,000 applications in the Android Market make Unlocked Google’s Nexus One Android operating system another priceless piece of software to have. Considering the fact that Android is only a couple of years old, has resulted in it being aptly termed a ‘revolution’.

A few months ago, it was revealed by Google that most devices of Android were being activated at around 100,000 per day. At that time, the total number of applications present was noted as 50,000. A few weeks later and these applications have increased by 15,000. These statistics are indication of the market share of the Android. Recent surveys have pegged Google Android as having a total market share of 33% by 2012. The past few months have seen a rapid rise in the number of Android based applications being made available for customers. In spite of the fact that Apples iPhone Unlocked Gadget is being put on the shelf, Google is not back down and when partnered together with various device manufacturers such as HTC and Motorola, you know that Apple will have to face some competition.  Considering the numerous applications available on Android seems to suggest that many do prefer it when choosing any   operating system. So the next time you plan on purchasing any mobile, it might be wise to ensure that you are getting the Android as the sheer numbers of applications available implies you will never be left wanting more.
