iPhone or Blackberry?

Recently we came across an article on the Wall Street Journal about the joys and pains of switching your phone to a smartphone.  Specifically a Apple iPhone or Blackberry.

It was a very good article but there are a few issues that we’d like to bring up.  First off the person writing this post is a Blackberry user and more specifically uses the Blackberry Curve 8900.  This is going to be as unbiased as possible as the author thinks both manufacturers have great products.

Like the article mentions it comes down to preference.  If you like Blackberry phones then you will likely stick with them and the same goes for iPhone users.  There are iPhone users that get the new iPhone every year when Apple releases it.  The only really difference is that Apple only has three phones all that look similar (slight look variations every year) and Blackberry has five or more active phones.  The choice isn’t necessarily a good thing as some people don’t want to have to from so many.

A couple of things the article said were true although they aren’t a big problem.  The first one was “The iPhone automatically changes its time when you enter a new time zone. BlackBerrys remain set to their home time zone for time stamping all emails with that time—unless you change the time in settings.”  While this is true it takes a total of fifteen seconds to go and change it to Network time.  This means that every where you go your phone will update its time based on the network.  So if you are on the east coast you will be on east cost time if you are on teh west coast your phone will say the time in the west coast.

The other issue was “The BlackBerry’s AC adaptor takes up two power outlet spots, while the small, square iPhone plug occupies only one outlet, making it more versatile and able to charge in more locations.”  We aren’t sure why they would say that.  Yes the iPhone has small one inch charger but the prongs are not retractable.  This means if you travel with it there is a chance they can bend or break.  The Blackberry charger is larger and by larger we mean the same size as every other charger.  The advantage is that the prongs are retractable and make for nicer travelling.  It only takes up two electrical outlets if you place it in the top socket.  Although an annoyance it is something that is common with a lot of plugs.

Overall we would highly recommend reading the article if you are thinking of either getting a new smartphone (Blackberry or Apple in particular) or if you are thinking about switching from a Blackberry to an iPhone or vice-versa

New Blackberries Surface

So CrackBerry.com has got some information on a new Blackberry Bold, well at least what is being called a Bold since the number is the 9020.  This new Blackberry Bold 9020 which looks like it was being called the “onyx”.  It is going to be a quad-band phone with tri-band 3G.  For full specs check out feedberry.com, but beware the site is not in English.  It is going to maintain the “leather” back

Blacberry Bold 9020

Also today from BoyGeniusReport.com we have learned of a new Blackberry 9700.  Specs seem pretty standard as it’s quad-band, 3G, comes with Bluetooth and WiFi.  Most notably it has Blackberry OS 5.0.  Unfortunately it’s still a very new find and no one has any photos yet.  As soon as more details become available PureMobile will definitely have them online.

Curve 8520 Coming Soon!

So a few months back we learned that BlackBerry was coming out with a new Curve.  Basically it was going to be the “true” successor to the Curve 83xx series of phones.  Not that the Curve 8900 series isn’t a Curve, but the new Curve 8520 would be more affordable.

Basically the Curve 8520 will be an upgrade to the 83xx series and a mid-level change to the Curve 8900.  It won’t have the exact same.  The screen won’t be as good as the Curve 8900 and the camera will only be a 2MP instead of a 3.2MP, but it will be good for people who are looking to get a new curve but don’t want to spend the 500$-600$

Well thanks to Crackberry.com it looks like the new Curve 8520 will be available in August, which hopefully means that PureMobile will have it shortly afterwards for all you.  Also it looks like it will be available in different colours like red, blue, black, white, etc… but that’s just a rumour.

So like everything else it’s still not sure exactly when but hopefully the Curve 8520 will be out in time for people to enjoy the new phone over the summer

What Do People Think Of The Blackberry Storm…

The Blackberry Storm 9530 has been released and here at puremobile.ca we finally got our hands on an unlocked one.

Over at cellphones.ca people visiting the site can review phones and one person wrote

…[t]his is the real iPhone killer.. the only real features this phone doesn’t have is the wifi.. but most of the people I know with an iPhone, don’t use the wifi.. since they generally have data plans. This phone has a 3.2MP camera with video, copy/paste ability, MMS capability, all things that trump the iPod with a phone.. because face it, that’s all the iPhone really is.

While the iPhone has a slightly more aesthetic value to the O/S.. I will give it that. Its only a matter of time before Bplay and RIM offer manipulations to the GUI for the BB Storm’s Theme interface. IN fact there are already clone themes for the blackberry O/S to look like the iPhone, plus many others, soon to be in development for the Storm’s version of the O/S.

But another review over at cellphones.ca seem to be split as another user wrote

…[t}he Storm has plenty of potential, but they obviously wanted to get this out the door as soon as they possibly could. Way too many bugs. Typing is a killer as it is always turning the keyboard off seemingly at random. I keep think I'm hitting some secret button to tell the keyboard to go away, but even when I slow my typing way down and carefully check each keystroke, it will suddenly disappear.

It has locked up on me a few times requiring battery removal to reboot. You need to hold the phone carefully to keep from accidently hitting a button on the touchscreen with your cheek that may either mute you or switch to speaker phone. Sometimes the speaker phone activates without me touching a thing and then I'll set the phone down on my desk and use it as a speaker phone when it will suddenly go back to handset mode without me even touching it!

But Shaun Mahal over at Brighthand.com seem split on the idea, which puts them in line with everyone else

...[t]he Storm has some unique features that unmistakably mark RIM’s attempt to capture some of the strong consumer smartphone market that the iPhone currently dominates. RIM is relying on its name to be able to build buzz around the device, but unfortunately it largely fails to deliver an infallible device that would live up to BlackBerry users’ high expectations….

As a smartphone enthusiast, I like the Storm because it represents the start of a new generation of touchscreen-based devices from RIM. Those familiar with BlackBerry will find the Storm an entertaining gadget, but hardly the pinnacle of this company’s capabilities.

The bottom line is that I’ve been carrying a Storm and a Bold in my pocket, and when I need to use a phone for something, it’s the Bold I instinctively reach for. In my opinion, the Storm is still one revision away from becoming the phone that RIM and most users want it to be.

What does this mean.  In short the choice is up to you.  The likability of the phone seems to be split.  Is it really an iPhone killer or just another dud?  We think Blackberry is definitely on to something they just can’t simply rest now.  If they want to get on top the have to start improving almost immediately

The Edge of Your Seat Wait… Blackberry Curve 8900

This week we figured we’d back about the new Blackberry 8900 also known as the the Curve.  It’s not been released yet but after the disappointment that the Storm left people are really looking forward to the new curve.  The older curve (8300) was a big success and was actually one of the most popular.  To this day we at puremobile.ca have that as a top seller.

Now about the Blackberry 8900 Curve.  The one thing lacking is 3G, but it does have a fast EDGE and Wi-Fi.  It looks like a smaller version of the Bold 9000 but since it hasn’t been released (except in certain European markets) no one has actually really had any hands on with the phone yet.

It does come with the newer operating system that is similar to the Blackberry Bold 9000.  So it’s a very clean fast interface that should prove to be quite reliable.

In the end as we said it’s still not officially released.  There is hopes that it will be out by Christmas but no one is sure of a North American release.  It has come out in Germany but the truth is they use a different keyboard layout so it’s not even worth trying to get it unlocked.

For now all we can do is wait.  As soon as www.puremobile.ca gets one we’ll post a full review.
