RIM is in the hot seat of bad press – once again!   Unfortunately for the beleaguered Canadian company, it involves its PlayBook 2.0, the long-awaited “second coming” of a BlackBerry tablet. Don’t get me wrong – a lot of issues were addressed in this next generation product, including the fact that the OS 2.0 on the PlayBook supports Android apps with the use of an emulation engine:  the Android Player.
While this is a pretty seamless end user experience - a full screen window opens and does incorporate many existing PlayBook featured including swiping down on the display to make the menu appear, there are some concerns being voiced from app developers.

For all those who are using Android phones, such as, Motorola DROID Razr, Samsung Galaxy S II, HTC Amaze, and the Sony Xperia, can turn to AppAware. They just re-launched a couple months ago with a completely overhauled version that turned the service into a social network for app discovery.

Perhaps the best ways to discover useful apps is to look at what people are actually updating, and not focus on which apps have the most installs. This is a good indicator of those apps having active support from their developers..
The following is the Pure Mobile Top 10 list of apps which were updated in the last seven days and received the most updates during that time period on AppAware.

Last December, Sony released an alpha Android 4.0 ROM... now they are regaling us with more ice cream sandwich goodness.  Sony has released the beta version of this ROM for select Sony Xperia devices

While this update comes with much more functionality than its predecessor, it still lacks very important features.   Some of the more prominent added features include activated GSM modem, FM radio, updated UI, beefed up lock screen and a quick dialer.  Being able to access GSM networks is probably the most important, consumer utilizing this  ROM will now be able to make calls... precisely what phone is designed to do.

Verizon may still be blushing a bit from its “free” PR blurb on Saturday Night Live the other weekend for its convoluted explanations and advertising of its 4G LTE network.   Luckily for the telecommunications giant, Verizon is looking to get a bit more positive press this week with the Android 4.0.3 update whispers for its Motorola DROID RAZR. And based on the leaked images to date, the details on the new user interface are much needed improvement over the most recent UI images of the MotoBLUR.
Watch this video for additional insight on the Motorola DROID RZR ICS

If you compare the images between the two Motorola devices, it is clear that the handset manufacturer has done an overhaul. Resplendent with the much touted Android 4.0, most of the custom skin has been removed to better let the ICS Holo theme come through. Motorola has made its mark on the [...]

With LG’s Optimus Vu and Samsung’s Galaxy Note launching  this year two concerns come to mind:

With a device this size having these specs... is it a smartphone or is it a tablet or is it a little bit  of both - to coin a new phrase smartabletphone
Do they really expect customers to hold this handset (overall dimensions of the Vu are 139.6 x 90.4 x 8.5mm) to speak on the phone for any length of time? At least the latter bodes well for Bluetooth headsets.

In addition to being a “multimedia lover’s dream device” - the phone features a 5-inch 1024 x 768 IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, an 8-megapixel camera, and will support LTE. What's new is the storage capacity — the phone will come with 32GB of storage — and the full dimensions. The phone measures in at 5.49 inches by 3.55 inches, making it [...]

According to analytics firm NPD, Android managed to steal the top spot from iOS by a sizable amount following Q4 last year, making Google's mobile OS the more popular choice amongst newcomers to the smartphone market.

First time smartphone buyers between October and December 2011 opted for an Android-based phone over an iPhone... that is 57% purchased an Android device, followed by 34% opting for an iPhone while the remaining 9% of buyers went with a different OS flavor.
Smartphone buyers in general, across the same time frame, helped narrow the gap between the two front runners, but Android still came out on top with 48% of the market over the 43% belonging to iOS users.

When one considers the contemptible handling of the PlayStation Network hacking to the latest successful launch of the new Sony Xperia line of Android based cell phone… we can say that Sony has had quite a year!
When they announced two Android tablets, then known as the S1 and S2, there was a palpable expectation among Sony loyalists that they were k on the tablet game. Sure, the clamshell S2 (now known as the Tablet P) was a strange creature, but at least Sony was innovating again!

The Tablet S is the “regular” of the two tabs, a 9.4″ featherweight teardrop of a slate, and quite easily the most uniquely and strangely designed tablet we’ve ever used. But more than design innovation, there are a number of software inclusions sitting atop a mostly-stock Honeycomb that point to where Sony is headed on a brand and platform integration level.
    Leaving your valuable [...]

The next-generation Samsung cell phone Galaxy S III is rumored as poised to impress. Due in part, that it will not be launched for a few months yet, reports are mainly unconfirmed. However, South Korea’s Electronic Times News cited unnamed sources in its headlines when the Galaxy 3 specs of the handset were outlined.

This upcoming smartphone is touted to be the thinnest yet – 7mm thick. To put it in perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S II is housed in handset that is 8.49mm. And they both have some impressive specs. The next-generation Galaxy will sport the latest Android 4.0 mobile platform, an 8 megapixel rear camera, a 2 megapixel front camera and a Super AMOLED Plus display to please the eye. Android. Apple. Apple. Android. The mobile OS brands and their respective handset manufacturers are in the grip of a fierce, cyclical competition to be the best and win global mindshare. Which is why we follow the momentum and progress of their sales and innovation so closely. So how did the vendors stack up against one another? The usual culprits are present: Apple’s iPhone 4S and Samsung’s Galaxy S 2.
    OEM Market Share
For the three-month average period ending in December, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.3 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG Mobile with 20 percent share and Motorola with 13.3 percent share. Apple continued to gain ground in the OEM market with 12.4 percent share of total mobile subscribers (up 2.2 percentage points), while RIM rounded out the top five [...]

Ah the Super Bowl – the height of both gridiron and consumerism competition. The game pits the top two football teams in the United States against one another - while advertisers bring out the big guns and vie for the attention of the millions of congregated viewers.

While the  New York Giants battled it out with the New England Patriots, Samsung decided to take the offensive against Apple with a string of anti-Apple advertisements. The crowning moments was a 90-second commercial that cost a cool $10 million to snag the airtime.  The following video is the Samsung's actual Apple bashing commercial aired during the Super Bowl.

The ad series pitches Samsung as the “cool” alternative to Apple’s iPhone; the Super Bowl commercial promoted their upcoming smartphone launch, the Galaxy Note, which will available at AT&T later this month.   This device is also available as an unlocked cell phone, empower consumers [...]
