Motorola Droid: Features & Review

November 11th, 2009

Boasting a new build of Android 2.0 designed by Google developers, the Motorola Droid is nearing its release date, which cannot seem to come fast enough for excited consumers.  The huge 3.7-inch touch screen display alone is enough to woo many into making an immediate upgrade, after getting a glimpse of its size and clarity. This widescreen comes with 854×480 resolution making for a sharp, clean display.  For those who prefer the QWERTY keyboard to an all touch screen experience, the Motorola Droid does include a slider on this model, with rumors of a keyboard-less version to come out next. Including a respectable 5MP camera with flash, autofocus, and video recording is a great feature combined with the 16MB onboard storage and microSD card slot to hold all that data.  Wi-Fi capability means you may never want to use your laptop again.  Seriously, though, the flagship feature of this phone is the speed due to the Google designed version of Android 2.0.  They have certainly proved themselves capable more than once of taking the same amount of data and organizing it just right to greatly improve search and function.

Despite all its huge features, the Motorola Droid proves to be a nicely compacted little unit. It comes in just slightly thicker than the iPhone 3GS, which is impressive considering that it includes the full-size QWERTY slider keyboard so as to not interfere with the screen.  The included li-ion battery’s life is not too shabby either, with approximately 18.5 hours standby or 7 hours talk time on a fully charged phone.  The desktop cradle charger that ships with the Motorola Droid is a nice touch, turning it into a multimedia station that can display local weather and time.  It remains to be seen if the Motorola Droid will make a dent into the devoted iPhone fan base, but accounting for all the upgrades featured here, it appears it will be a worthy contender.
