We recently had a chance to view and blog about the leaked Sony smartphone roadmap. If this is to be believed we expect Sony to release three phones in 2nd quarter of 2012… these are the LT22i Nypon, the MT27i Pepper and the ST25i Kumquat. it is most probable that these three cell phones will be formerly announced by Sony at next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

From a leaked document found on an Indonesian website agency… which is the equivalent of the US based FCC has listed Sony’s code named ST25i smartphone as the new Sony Xperia U – thanks to GSM Arena for the provided specs. Above is one of the first leaked images of the new Xperia U which is a welcome addition to the Sony Xperia cell phone business line. Which makes wonder if Sony is planning to follow in Samsung- branded cell phones footsteps by creating an a plethora of Xperia models.

No doubt, Nokia cell phone Lumia 900 made quite an impression at CES, but another (non-Samsung and non-Apple) smartphone contender made waves as well. That is Sony Ericsson’s Xperia S. Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson opted to use the Snapdragon S3 chip instead of the S4. Also disappointing is the lack of LTE on this device (which the manufacturer doled out to its AT&T exclusive Xperia Ion in the US). There are rumors that an LTE Sony phone will come Canada’s way in Q3, but in tech terms that is quite a ways out.

Some silver lining to the LTE regret is Sony will be bundling Video Unlimited support and the Xperia S is Playstation Certified which is great news for gamers who will have access to an ever growing number of PSOne games. This makes a case for purchasing better earpieces and headphones, speakers and additional MicroSD Memory cards to get the most of the device investment.

Canada should see this smartphone hit the market in March or so, but actual release dates and carrier availability are bound to follow, so keep tuned!

When Apple launched the iPhone 4S there were plenty of bystanders that were disappointed that the latest smartphone was not the elusive iPhone 5. The silver lining is that this prolonged release has given plenty of fodder for the tech gossip mill as we all speculate if the next generation iPhone will be drastically different.

Latest reports note that Apple’s upcoming device will be slimmer than the iPhone 4S and iPhone handsets and will also strut some new tech as well. The iPhone 5 may have a quad-mode chipset from Qualcomm that will work on all 4G LTE and 3G networks which has the implication of making this unlocked cell phone device more widely available across mobile carriers.

Giving credence to these details is a BGR exclusive last month that reported Apple’s intention to launch a completely redesigned iPhone in the fall. It will have an aluminum case and a rubber or perhaps plastic bezel that will protect and cover a new wrap-around antenna.  Possibly more dependable accounts came from Morgan Stanley’s analyst, Katy Huberty, who noted that Apple sent a communication to clients last Friday. Those statements assured that Apple’s business will continue to grow even with a slowing demand for high-end smartphones. There is no question that the company’s strength is in its iTunes, iCloud and other proprietary technologies that marry customers so closely the OS platform.

Included in Huberty’s comments was the mention of Apple’s next generation tablet, the iPad3 which is slated to launch at some point in the first half of the year. With traditional pricing strategy in play, the iPad2 will be lowered in cost to attract additional customers to the iOS platform and to Apple’s strength in the tablet market.

The world’s greatest tech show – CES 2012 – kicked off on Monday, January 9th… and will run until Friday January 13th.

Nozomi, Nozomi – where have you been all our life?! Okay – in tech speak that translates into « where have you been all this year?! » But the sentiment is the same. The more we see of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Arc HD (also known by the name Nozomi, the more stunned we are of the beauty of this devise.

Thin and super modern, this chic smartphone has a 1280×720 pixel HD display and is rumored to sport a 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor under the hood. But for those who need more oomph of memory and electronic accessories are available to enhance phone features and functionality.

Another Google Android platform phone, this upcoming addition to the Sony Ericsson line features a 12 MP back camera, an HDMI port for 1080p mirroring and possibly a light bar for its touch buttons. What has been confirmed is that the Android OS will be the 2.3.5 Gingerbread will be the operating system upon release and then to be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich when Sony Ericsson is ready to roll.  No news on whether this will be released as an unlocked cell phone that will be carrier agnostic, but those details are sure to be forthcoming.

Unfortunately, this little darling does not have a micro SD card port. Internal storage is either 16GB or 32GB.  To cut down on space, there will be no micro SIM port. We love the glitz and glamourous  glimpses of the Next Best Thing to hit the market; despite the fact that the consumer is the only factor that influences a product’s market success.    So eager reader, here is another shot of teaser eye candy leaked from Hong Kong  –  the next generation Sony Xperia smartphone, codenamed Nozomi.  Compared to this beauty’s underground debut last month, the newest glimpse showcases this newest Xperia member in even better light.

From the limited information that be can be gleaned, Nozomi appears to be running the new version of the Xperia skin. The Android Gingerbread OS looks to be the platform version du jour, but Ice Cream Sandwich is just around the corner. And, the three dots lined along the bottom of the screen are speculated as potential place holders for a future ICS upgrade. Sony is taking full heed of the old adage – « Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. » While this is not  quite how the phrase was made notorious by former President George W. Bush, but it is a sentiment that Sony Ericsson customers can relate to.  Way back when Android released v1.6 (time being relative in the technology world) for the Sony Xperia X10, customers experienced an unnecessary amount of pain when attempting to upgrade their smartphones’ operating system.

Prior to November 14th Sony Ericsson did not have access to the Android 4.0 ICS sourcecode, so they pulled up their shirtsleeves and began adapting their different devices.  Since  the code was optimized to work with Texas Instrument chipsets, there were some inevitable delays as Sony Ericsson rewrote most of the code from Hardware Abstraction Layer in order to interoperate with Qualcomm’s hardware.  In a heart-warming display of corporate collaboration… this software coding  is being shared with Android and its open source project – perhaps hinting at a willingness to pursue carrier neutrality with unlocked cell phone releases in the future.

The behind-the-scene coding work ensured that the migration to the Gingerbread v2.3 was, like its name, sweeter and smoother, with significantly less customer trepidation.  Moving forward,  Sony Ericsson has opted to makeover all the 2011 Xperia devices with the Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS v4.0 – across all their Xperia brand portfolio –  Sony Xperia Mini Pro, Sony Arc, Sony Ray, Sony Cedar and Sony Play). For those Xperia smartphone users that prefer more tangible upgrades, a physical makeover with updated protective cases and skins may be more satisfying while waiting for the ICS OS release.

In their efforts to effectively communicate the upcoming upgrades, Sony Ericsson has been very open with customers. This is great and all, but consumer impatience is setting in. After all, it’s the season for instant gratification – even if that new speaker dock for your smartphone has to sit on the closet shelf for a few weeks. To top off the impatience, some users still have some lingering concerns based on the Android 1.6 incident.

In  true technology-forward fashion, Sony Ericsson released a detailed blog post which outlining the timeline of events for the ICS OS roll out. There is no firm date on when the ICS upgrades will be available to end-users as their mobile devices go through rigorous internal testing and then testing externally to receive certification from the various carriers.

The recent Apple press conference was as usual filled with fun facts and data about the health of Apple as a company. Whatever metrics that looks good was included in the presentation given by Tim Cook. Even though this was mainly an iPhone event they did not hesitate in sharing their growth in other areas of their business.

The main announcement about their other business was in the areas of the iMac and Macbook sales in the last quarter. The reports indicate that they now have 23% of the entire PC market making them the number one option on a by brand level in the world. Growth over last year was a 23% increase versus a mere 4 percent growth by other PC manufacturers.
