MTS BlackBerry Storm2 9550

July 30th, 2010

Now this is a perfect example where we can be clichéd and use the proverb ‘better late than never’. It has always been this way. Local providers have always been a little too late in adopting the latest in the smartphones. The regional vendors and providers flinch and hesitate when it comes to taking up the newest in the smart phones. They have their reasoning. Big companies won’t mind a marginally small profit from certain regions simply because they would make up for it in other markets, in other regions. This is a chance they can safely take and more than that, this is a risk they are willing to pay for because sometimes it works in their favour and the risk turns to be worth it. Whereas the smaller regional companies this risk is too great for them to venture on. Hence they tend to initially shy away from any new dastardly alterations in the technological world. Hence the smart phone upgrades or software enhancement or newer firmware development installation takes a back seat if you are dealing with a regional carrier. So was the case in respect to the BlackBerry Storm2 9550. It took a long time for them to adopt the latest smartphone: BlackBerry Unlocked Storm2 9550.

This new gadget features everything that you feel that must be inside the gen-next smartphone models. It has a modest resolution of 480*360 with a 3.25 display and a virtual QWERTY keyboard and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The camera though not high on the resolution, but it packs quite a punch with its impressive line of features other than that it has the 3.5 mm headset jack and the speakerphones, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, 2GB on-board memory and expansion to 16GB via microSD.

The model is coming out with a price of $199.99 on a 3-year term and a $299.99 on a 2-year.

MTS buys of Multiregion

July 30th, 2010

There had been a lot of speculation and doubts regarding whether Russian MTS would acquire the Multiregion. Now the answer is out, and  it is positive. Russian Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has finally got hold of hundred percent of the CJSC Multiregion company. This company, Multiregion had been and is one of the leading groups of broadband and cable providers in their Russian domain. It has particularly its stronghold in the Cavalo Trading Limited, Cyprus. The Russian Mobile TeleSystems have bought off the deal at a whopping cost of $123.5 million for the company, which puts them in a tight spot with $94.4 million in debt. But TeleSystems seem to be all to calm about the entire ordeal and ensures all and sundry that this deal was worth it and it would soon seem to be paying off.

Multiregion has its links and branches in around 37 cities of the Russian Federation. So it comes as no surprise when it states that it wouldn’t take much to clear off the debt from the cell phone broadband and transaction. It has its reach in 1.8 million households in Russia and around 1.3 million of which is FTTB based. With approximately 700,000 cable TV subscribers and 260,000 broadband subscribers, the debt problem seems already solved and taken care off.

This latest stunt by the MTS will now strengthen its already strong foundation in the telecommunications business in Russia. It now holds a major portion of all communications that trickles through their country. This scary monopoly has made them the telecommunications giant that they had always aspired to become. Buying of a large chunk of CJSC seems to be their greatest feat till date.

The newly appointed CEO of their company promptly answered to the doubts and awe of the people with his statement: “It [Multiregion acquisition] fits perfectly into our ’3i’ strategy, as it allows us to expand our integrated service portfolio and to differentiate our products from the competition.”

Trouble for Windows Phone 7-Is it a disaster?

July 28th, 2010

This may not be good news for Microsoft for their cell phone as initial reports that we have got from agencies say that this phone may be a waste of time and is not worth the price people plan to pay for it. This after our sources got to lay their hands on this phone for a demo run of it. Although this phone has been mostly criticized, we here have been somewhat cautious in putting this phone to the side and going against it. In fact we think that the phone has the potential to be pretty good because of the good hardware it carries.

In fact some of the reviewers have totally lambasted the phone and the software giant for having ever thought of coming into the smartphone market. It has been widely remarked that this phone is a complete waste of money and time. According to some experts, this phone will not attract any attention from developers nor from any of the major carriers in the market. They believe that Windows would be better off without this phone rather than trying to push it through in the market at their cost.

The major bone of contention for this phone has been the Windows Phone special UI or what is named ‘Metro’. This is a departure from the usual grid and icon interface which is there in the Android phones as well as the unlocked  iPhone4 and has a new hub like interface where the apps can be interlinked. This interface has in several places been called cumbersome and cluttered when multiple apps come into a hub. Furthermore, this device has been attacked for its efficiency in multitasking.

However it is sad that no matter how much we are hopeful about the Microsoft Windows Phone 7, it is indeed a pretty weak phone. It would have been nice however to have this company as an important player in the smartphone market.

iPhone 4 recall could cost Apple a whopping $15 billion according to Analyst:

July 22nd, 2010

The antenna and reception issue of Unlocked iPhone 4 has been haunting Apple since its introduction. The problem has been described to be widespread and there have been several enquiries about this. Needless to say that Apple is in a position where they have to assess the situation and look at a recall. It is indeed the best thing to do after many were left distraught after Steve Jobs’ series of terse e-mails to people making enquiries.

However, the damage that the company will incur as a result of this has thrown up some mind blowing data. Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi has some interesting notifications. He believes a recall would cost Apple $15 billion which is an unbelievable amount to be considered. He also adds that it is highly unlikely that Apple would go for a recall even though consumer reports have been prompt about removing it from its recommended list of products.

Not all are affected by this particular problem and a recall is only possible if there is a really serious problem accepted by Apple Iphone 4 unlocked handset. This has not happened so far. Hence, a total product recall is close to impossible with $15 billion at stake.

It may be assumed that the hardware issue in the phone that has been given a little momentum by the media hype surrounding it. That has obviously catapulted into this anomalous situation. Apple and Jobs have obviously not been at their best in managing this issue and it has really got out of hand. The media attention to that has worsened matters. It would be quite foolish of Apple to go for product recall considering it won’t affect their PR in a grand way and the media will soon shift to a new product fiasco soon enough. People will just have to wait to find out.

International Calling options raised by Boost

July 20th, 2010

Boost mobile network has recently done itself a lot of good by continuing its determined endeavor to provide the best of international calling options from your phone for its customers. These new plans have not been made largely public yet but we have got some inside information for you. As was the case before, the company will continue to provide with their own package for international calls, push to talk and text messages for a fee of $50 per month and an additional $10 fetches you a bonus pack kind of a thing on the international plan where you can make unlimited calls to landlines in the Dominican Republic, 150 cities in Mexico and send text messages to Canada. This new plan has not yet been told to the customers, but we are waiting eagerly for this.

The company has reiterated their commitment to the people in helping them remain connected to their loved ones internationally. In an official statement from the company, Neil Lindsay who is the Chief marketing officer in the company has said that the new international calling boost mobile will give the discerning customer a new and better way to make calls across the borders as this plan, unlike the calling cards which are usually used to make international calls, comes without any hidden costs attached to it. The only problem associated with this is that the service provider actually looses out on brownie points because of the good unlocked cell phone that other prepaid service providers offer. Such handsets are much better than what is being offered by Boost. However, this nonetheless does not rule this provider out of the main slug fest with the other prepaid providers like Virgin who have been in this market for a longer time.

This service is quite decent in our opinion and we in fact are looking forward to this one as its work ethics have caught our attention.

HID Global and INSIDE Contactless’s new initiative

July 19th, 2010

HID Global along with INSIDE Contactless is adding another major innovation to already exhausting credentials by introducing iClass access controls to the handsets that are NFC-enabled. This along with identity credentials will result in the plastic cards that are used today being replaced by applications that are helpful in identifying the consumer or the commercial. Thus being a one of a kind venture in the field of cell phone security.

News concerning such issues doesn’t generally receive a lot of attention in the media and mostly remain ignored or unnoticed but when a little birdie spreads the word that INSIDE Contactless has certain monetary dealings with the two moguls in the mobile handset industry namely Unlocked Nokia Cell Phones and Motorola, it is bound to cause a stir. This also brings to the forefront the biggest problem to the venture i.e. the lack of NFC-enabled phones available in the market today. Keeping this in mind the thought of owning a phone that would enable contactless payments and identification possible seems far-fetched. But again that is a different story altogether and doesn’t call for concern or alarm and should be left to the initiators to worry about.

Sources from inside the company reveal that INSIDE has gone so far, as to update its micro read NFC controller to make use of the required protocols and command sets so that it can communicate with the HID iClass readers. The company has also decided to feature iClass support in all the NFC products that will be launched by them in the future. This will ensure that users using INSIDE’s iClass enabled microread NFC controller will now be able to use the iClass virtual credentials support upon requirement. In order to use these virtual credentials and the credential management and crypto functions, they have to be activated. The software’s are provisioned by HID Global and it is they who will activate your required credentials.

Mobile banking twice as better as last year according to IDC:

July 19th, 2010

The recent survey of IDC reveals that mobile banking has doubled since last year. Although it has still not achieved a primary importance, it has become a familiar option. IDC explains in detail the various ways in which this is being estimated. The banks are realizing the fact that revenue opportunities are quite limited with regard to phone banking.  It is certainly useful for end users and there may be a change if there is new development with respect to mobile payments. The change is quite prominent and has been a major revelation in recent past. The data is accurate and verified.

The research and analysis of IDC brings to light some fascinating data. Usage was considered and it was realized that it was quite prominent across all channels. Bankers as a result were in charge of managing more transactions. This is because it is apparent that delivery options are indeed expanding at a rapid pace. Short message service has been pointed out quite a few times as the most prominent mobile banking tool. It has become a huge source of banking and it has acknowledged at several places by IDC.

Custom alerts are becoming popular, as are the payments outside the network. Although survey reveals mobile banking usage by all ages, it is usually deemed to be preferred more by the young male people. They have been surveyed using mobile banking the most and it has been proven statistically. There vast majority of phone banking usage, but is spread almost in a balanced manner over all age groups.

The branch network has to be bettered of the financial facility service provider if it hopes to get adequate importance in this field. They have to better themselves to compete with the new form of banking possibilities.
