The Consumer Electronics Show this week in Vegas is shaping up to be a great soapbox for reintroducing the feature phone king, Nokia, to the global competitive stage of smartphones. Beginning with an agreement with Microsoft last year, the Finnish company is placing its initial bets on the United States market and its partnership with Microsoft.
During Nokia’s press conference at CES, the audience was treated to more news about the Nokia line up of smartphones. Also mentioned is how the Windows mobile OS pairs with Nokia specific apps for a top notch customer experience. To top off the conference, there was a glimpse of the AT&T exclusive partnership in store for US customers (looks as though at least the Lumia 900 will not be unlocked).
As the Lumia 900 will be its flagship 4G LTE phone in the US, this is not surprising. The flip side is that the [...]

On a personal note, my mother is a literature junkie. So, it is no surprise that on their cross country jaunts to visit over the holidays she loads up her smartphone with audio book downloads before hitting the road. As we discussed my newest iPad 2 tablet acquisition and simultaneously recounted the wonderful rendition of Austenland, she insisted I download the audio book app and log in under her name to download it. Just a few short minutes later, the file was available. Her response was “wow. I am seriously impressed at how fast you were able to download and store it without needing additional memory storage cards.”
And, in this world of instant gratification, speed is king. Especially on our mobile browsers. So which smartphone manufacturer has the need for speed? This is an excellent question considering the varying strengths of these smartphone players. Android is the bees [...]

Nokia bids Farewell to Symbian!
The Finnish mobile device manufacturer, Nokia, has not found much success moving from their popular feature phones to the smartphone market. Nokia cell phone's Symbian OS platform has proven to be no match for Android or iOS. So, in a move that clearly shows their intention to abandon ship, Nokia is dropping the platform and renaming its latest phone Nokia Belle. This effort to catch up with its contemporaries on the technology level adds some zing to the 2012 speculation. Will the adoption of a new platform include the release of a powerful, competitive tablet?

As a typical profile... mobile consumers are highly socially engaged, remain continuously connected and rely more and more on their both carrier based or unlocked smartphone's features and applications on a daily basis.
Smartphone penetration has seen a meteoric rise, spiraling from just 18% in late 2009 to 44% in October 2011. A recent 'State of the Media: The Mobile Media Report' conducted by Nielsen indicates that 64% of 25-34 year olds and 53% of 18-24 year olds own a snmartphone and have led in smartphone penetration compared to every other age group since 2009. Technology companies are increasingly traded, acquired, and merged within industry similar to commodities with enormous sums of money involved. Since the stakes are high in these transactions - industry rumors of sales, mergers and acquisitions are closely monitored and followed. It is this high-energy atmosphere that may account for Nokia’s inability to quell rumors swirling about selling its Nokia cell phone line of business to Microsoft.
The Finnish company’s smartphone future was called into the speculation spotlight once again this Wednesday when Danske Bank informed its clients that Nokia will be selling the smartphone division to Microsoft sometime in the first half of 2012. This kind of claim carried serious clout as it came from the largest bank in Denmark. And with any speculation, there is money to be made which undermines some confidence in veracity. After making this announcement, Danske Bank changed the rating of Nokia stock from [...]

Not to editorialize or personalize the matter too much, but this writer has to give points to Nokia’s Niels Munksgaard for his recent statement this Tuesday. As the company’s global director of portfolio, product marketing & sales stated, “What we see is that youth are pretty much fed up with iPhones. Everyone has the iPhone,” Munksgaard said. “Also, many are not happy with the complexity of Android and the lack of security. So we do increasing see that the youth that wants to be on the cutting edge and try something new are turning to the Windows phone platform.” Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!
