Rogers releases the Motorola QUENCH for $50

May 31st, 2010

While it may not be the best Android smartphone available, Canadians who want to take Google’s mobile OS for a spin should look no further than the Motorola Unlocked ( QUENCH ).  Available today from Rogers, the QUENCH is comparable to the T-Mobile CLIQ XT.  This new device will come equipped with a 3.1 inch capacitive HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, GPS, HSDPA and MOTOBLUR atop of Android 1.5.

The price for the Motorola QUENCH is slated to start at $49.99 on contract which is not a bad price for any type of smartphone these days.  While lacking some of the higher end features that other Android powered smartphones have the QUENCH is certainly still a quality handset for those shoppers who are on a budget.  With the ever popular Android operating system the QUENCH will still be able to offer consumers access to the Android Market that is home to thousands of applications for their mobile device.  Add in the fact that this device supports GPS, WiFi and has a 5 megapixel camera and you are looking at one of the better deals on the market today.

If you live in Canada and have to try out an Android powered smartphone due the rising costs seemingly associated with smartphones these days then I highly recommend taking a look at the Motorola QUENCH.  Who cares if you are not wowing your friends with the latest and greatest in smartphone technology you will be saving a bundle of money when purchasing this phone instead.  While you are saving all of this money you will still be able to do many of the same things that other unlocked smartphone users do with their higher priced devices.  For this reason alone the Motorola QUENCH is well worth it.

Apple iPhone 4G Launch Date Confirmed by Telus?

May 27th, 2010

Was this intentional or a major screw up on an employees part?  What’s coming June 8, 2010?  Does anyone else think it’s possibly the iPhone 4G that is being launched?

Up until now everything is just speculation, but we have to wonder.  We don’t know of any phone that is expected in June other then the iPhone, let alone a phone that warrants a count down.  Everyone knows the next big lunch that has everyone waiting is the iPhone and with Telus now carrying it this count down makes us think.

I guess we will just have to wait until June 8th to see what is actually coming.

Samsung i8920 Omnia HD2 leaking its way across the net

May 27th, 2010

It appears that Samsung’s successor to the Symbian-powered i8910 is finally here.  Details of this new device are starting to show up all over the internet to rave reviews.  This new handset called the Unlocked Samsung ( i8920 Omnia HD2) will come with a 4 inch Super AMOLED screen, 12 megapixel camera with both Xenon and LED flash, 30 fps 720p video recording and 15 or 32 GB storage which will all be running atop Symbian^3.

Even though this new smartphone will be running the Symbian OS it still looks like it will be a significant upgrade over the first Samsung i8910 Omnia.  In addition to the features listed above this new smartphone will also sport WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 which are quickly becoming the standard amongst high end smartphones.

This new Samsung handset is likely to be one of the last running the Symbian OS.  Samsung is rumored to stop production of Symbian phones by 2011.  If you are a fan of this operating system then you will certainly want to get your hands on this new device when it becomes available in stores.

The Samsung i8910 was one of their better selling high end smartphones in the last year.  With the addition of several new features like a 12 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 3.0 and WiFi the i8920 figures to sell just as well as the i8910 if not better.  I am sure that a few other specs will be leaked around the internet here shortly as well that will also suggest that the i8920 can become one of the better selling smartphones on the market today.

Google Announces Android 2.2 Froyo

May 26th, 2010

Recently at its I/O Conference in San Francisco, Google introduced Nexus One Unlocked Android 2.2 Froyo which is their latest Android operating system.  Froyo builds upon Android 2.1 and offers a number of improvements.  The biggest new feature that has people the most excited is built-in support for tethering and WiFi hotspots.  It also has permanent buttons for both “phone” and “web” alongside the menu key.  Another feature that was added to this new Android update is that users can now update multiple apps from the Android Market at one time.  Previously users had to update each app individually which usually turned into a nightmare when the majority of your apps had an update waiting.

Some other updates included with Android 2.2 are faster speed of the platform as well as the inclusion of Flash Player 10.1 making this the first smartphone OS to support the Flash Player technology.   The includsion of Flash Player 10.1 is expected to be a huge hit among smartphone consumers.  Now everyone can get all of the same streaming media on their cell phone that they would while surfing the internet on a laptop or desktop computer.

There really are a large number of updates to this operating system that is sure to make Android 2.2 a huge success.  With Android handsets already closing the market share gap between themselves and the iPhone I think that with this new OS Android has a great chance of catching up if not surpassing the iPhone as the most popular smartphone.  Android 2.2 Froyo will be available today to owners of the Nexus One and the Unlocked Motorola Milestone Droid in the near future.  Google also plans to make it available to devices such as the HTC Incredible, EVO 4G. Desire and Motorola Milestone.

Sony has not left much out of this phone, as it has a 2.55” QVGA resolution and capacitive screen.  It uses the android Timescape interface and UX.  This interface will give you all of the features and functions to be able to indicate with your web services and all of your social media.  Because the screen size is relatively small, it will only be able to use one widget at a time.  It does come with four shortcut keys on the home screen that you can change based on your personal needs.  The phone also comes with a five megapixel camera that has a flash and the geo-tagging features an auto focus.  There is a video camera and utilizes the 640 x 480 pixel resolution.

HTC Wildfire set to be released with Android 2.1

May 19th, 2010

At a recent press conference in Germany HTC has officially announced a Q3 release of their latest handset called Wildfire.  This new HTC Unlocked (Wildfire) device  is set to be released in Europe and Asia later this year.  The new smartphone will come equipped with quadband GSM and 900/1200 MGz UMTS/HSDAP radios to the Android 2.1 operating system as well as a Qualcomm MSM 7225 processor running at 525MHz.  Other specs for this new handset include HTC’s Sense UI, 3.2 inch QVGA touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, 512 MB Flash and 384 MB of RAM, and microSD expansion.

The HTC Wildfire is expected to follow the success of the HTC Desire and bring the company’s HTC Sense UI experience to a younger audience.  The Sense UI will bring together all of your social media communications to one place.  Whether it is through Facebook, Twitter, text messages or email HTC’s Sense UI will provide a unique user experience to enhance people’s social media use.  HTC Wildfire will allow you to stay up to date with your friends’ posts, comments, alerts and photos no matter where you are.

It certainly looks like HTC is gearing the Wildfire device towards a younger audience that is social media centric.  One of the more interesting features of the Wildfire is a new app sharing widget that will enable users to recommend an application by email, text message or over social networks.  When an app is recommended your friends will receive a link allowing them to find the application in the Motorola Milestone Unlocked Android gadget with a single click and download it to their phone.  This will be a great way to share your favorite apps with all of your friends no matter how you communicate with them.

Mobilicity announces its Canadian plans, launches in Toronto

May 19th, 2010

Good news for all of you cell phone consumers in the Toronto area that are looking to save a few extra bucks on your cell phone bills.  A new wireless carrier is set to join the local market and provide plans that are far more competitive that its closest competition, WIND Mobile.

Mobilicity is not pretending to be a national carrier.  This new company is for “people that live, work, and play in one city.”  They have several different plans to choose from.  The lowest monthly plan starts at $15 and offers unlimited texts to North America and free in-network calling.  Moving up to a more standard plan with unlimited talk is $25 per month and unlimited texts being an addition $10 per month.  If you want unlimited everything, including data, then the $65 a month plan is what you will need.  This plan offers unlimited North American calls, texts, data plus voicemail, call forwarding, 3-way calling and call waiting.

Since this company is designed to service people who rarely travel there are various roaming charges you will have to pay if you are to leave your home market.  Calls made outside of your home service area will cost 20 cents per minute, texts will be 10 cents and each megabyte of data will cost $5.

Mobilicity sounds like a pretty good deal for cell phone customers who rarely travel and only use their cell phones in the same market.  The new carrier also has a pretty decent lineup of handsets to choose from.  These devices include the Unlocked  BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Snap, Nokia 5230 Sony Ericsson TM506 and more.  If you live in the Toronto area and rarely travel I would highly recommend looking into this new mobile carrier as you could stand to save a bit of money on your monthly bills.
