  • No waterproof case? Galaxy S4 Active may be dust-proof, waterproof

Though you can get your hands on a waterproof Galaxy S4 case from third-party makers like OtterBox, waterproof accessories were noticeably missing from the line of officially-branded Galaxy S4 accessories Samsung released recently. Now, with talk of an upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Active model, we may know why.

Mashable reported today on a video from MobileTechReview that shows a sneak peek of Samsung's upcoming "rugged version" of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Dubbed the Galaxy S4 Active, the new Samsung phone may not even need a waterproof case (like OtterBox's Armor case series), since it's rumored to be both waterproof and dust-proof on its own.

That's not as outlandish as it seems, since waterproof phones, like Sony's XPeria Z and XPeria ZR are already on the market. And Mashable seems to be standing by the claims that the new Galaxy S4 Active will be as well.

There is however, a drawback. As Mashable puts it: "the phone's specifications seem considerably weaker than those of theĀ original Galaxy S4," most notably a dual-core rather than quad-core processor and 8- rather than 13-megapixel camer. However, the rest of the specs seem more or less in line with the regular Galaxy S4.

So waterproof and dust-proof Galaxy S4 does seem like a genuine possibility, and there are aspects of that that certainly possess an appeal. Though if you think you'll be able to go completely without a carrying case with the next Galaxy device, think again.

We're still a ways away from shater-proof smartphones, so even if the new phone lives up to its rumored waterproof and dust-proof capabilities, you're still going to want a carrying case for the Galaxy S4 Active, however rugged it ends up showing itself to be.
